August 4, 20214 yr Popular Post In the middle of a $2 tub of screwdrivers.. Lets see, toss out the cheapo plastic stuff, and that FUBAR hammer.....there are 2 Nicholson Smooth Mill files....and what looks like a handled Triangular file....rest appear to be Irwins/Stanleys....but...that handled file? Metal part of the handle is a 2 piece thing...with a LUTZ File & Tool Co. Cinti. OH stamped into it..... Yet it has a 30 degree bevel? That can fit into most dovetail joints? Most of the file's teeth are worn out...hmmm, might have a use for this, later.... User made? Or....Wood does not appear to have ever seen a mallet. Still trying to read an etch ON the file itself...
August 4, 20214 yr Popular Post Bandit, I've tried soaking worn files in vinegar or sulfuric acid to renew them. A good wire brushing at the grinder beforehand, helps. They ain't like new but, serviceable. Edited August 4, 20214 yr by Gene Howe
August 6, 20214 yr Author BTDT...problem being...acid does not stop...and you have to neutralize it....then have to clean that off.... One could leave a few items in a glass jar too long...and come back and find....nothing...maybe some black sludge in the bottom of the jar. I just stick with the wire wheel...

Yeah, ya gotta keep an eye on it. I just dip the files in a jar of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid.
August 7, 20214 yr Little known fact: Lutz File and Tool bought Millers Falls a few years ago. I don't know what if anything they have done with it. But it started Gorilla Glue and I think spun it off. I did some work for the owners a few years ago (lacquered a yellow cabinet to match another one that was already yellow). My local Do-It-Best Hardware store used to carry Lutz screwdrivers in a little box on the service desk.
August 12, 20214 yr Author I put the Lutz to good use the other day.... Was just the thing to get in those corners
August 12, 20214 yr Author As for a Lutz screwdriver? Ever see one of these? Would have used it, today...didn't find the right tip...had to use a Fat Max one, instead....
