June 24, 20214 yr One of my daughters has asked me to make a "barn door" for her kitchen remodel. Other than the track and wheel system it is hung from, how do you keep it from banding into the baseboard or flying away from the wall. Is this part of the hardware package?
June 25, 20214 yr Popular Post I seem to recall that, on one I saw installed, that there's a floor mounted retainer, or two, on the open side. Possibly, one on the closed side as well.
June 25, 20214 yr Popular Post Do an image search for barn door guides and choose a barn door kit that includes the type you may prefer.
June 25, 20214 yr Being an expert on these type doors from watching ALL of the home improvement shows that cable carries (, covid forced me to do a lot of things I didn't want to do) I know some of the sets come with a little guide of some sort that fastens to the floor. This is little more than a set of fingers that extend up past both sides of the door to keep it from swinging in or out from the wall. No idea if they all come with it, but it seems like they would.

June 25, 20214 yr Popular Post I did one (actually a double set) that had a single plastic guide that screwed to the floor. It required a routed groove or a saw kerf in the bottom of the door. Not much fun, and I would look for a different setup another time. And you either install it on the trim, or add a board so it clears the trim.

"let's take down a wall and lose space for cabinets!" yay! "let's install a 'rustic' barn door in our 10 year old modern house with all the modern features" yay.

June 26, 20214 yr Popular Post Was included in the hardware package when I made mine. I cut a groove in the bottom of the door, so the retainer is concealed.
June 26, 20214 yr Popular Post Should say the retainer was included in the hardware kit. The plastic dealy didn't last long, I replaced it with a piece of aluminum angle stock Edited June 26, 20214 yr by Kenny Tarmack Had to add more subject
June 26, 20214 yr Kenny, that's a beautiful set of doors, well done. Does the left door slide over that wall hanging?

June 27, 20214 yr Popular Post BTW, the groove in the bottom of the door sounds like a much better idea than a guide that spans either side. Well done!
June 29, 20214 yr Nice doors ! One way to make the bottom guides is to cut the slot and then use a piece of painted metal angle that can be screwed to the floor for the guide. Paul
July 8, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Daughter visited this week. They are looking for hardware. I didn't tell her, but I think what they want to do is not possible. They want a surface mount, two doors that roll in front and behind each other as there is not room on either side for them to roll out. Time will tell. In the meantime, I have other projects.

Sounds like a job for an engineer or some added overhead timbers
