Yellow Heart

Featured Replies

Four or five years ago I attempted to purchase some Yellow Heart at Rockler's. I was informed that it was no longer available......it was on the endangered list. When ever I went to a wood supply store I'd look under the pile and maybe I would find a small piece. Yesterday I went to Rockler's and found small pieces of Yellow Heart in open display. I asked the clerks about it being endangered. They looked it up and said it was not. I also looked when I got home. I couldn't find info about endangerment. I do think that it must not be available in large pieces, there were none stocked in this new enlarged wood supply at Denver Rocklers.

I've never heard of "Yellowheart" @Ron Altier so I just had to look it up.  Its a very pretty colored wood with a nice grain pattern.  How ever what I found is that it is NOT endangered according to google searches.

Hopefully that somewhat helps out.

I know Rocklers and Woodcraft told me they could no longer get it as of about 4 years ago. When ever I went to one of the wood supply stores.....I never saw it for sale, until very recently. Puzzling. If you decide to use it, you will be pleased how nice it is to work with and the color helps detail projects.

Yea I try to avoid doing any shopping at rocklers if at all possible.  Seeing that they decided to charge me 3 times for 1 item.  Id like to use it but car issues at the moment left me with no money for wood this month so exotic wood purchases for me will have to wait.  Its out there just expensive.

I happened on a plank a few years ago at a store in Arkansas which unfortunately has since closed. I still have most of it and use it for accents in Ringmaster bowls. I don't think I have done a RM in about 3 years now. Got to get the machine adapted to the PM as it was set for my jet 1442.

I have had the same experience with it. For a while it wasn’t available and now in the last year or so I have seen it available at our local hardwood supplier and also at a supplier in Phoenix. I like it for contrast in certain applications. I thought it was fairly rare until recently. I see from the link it’s Brazilian which I did not know. It’s very oily and one of those wipe it with acetone before you glue it situations.

When I buy some, it is only small quantities and I combine it with other colorful woods to turn down on my mini lathe. Usually a Christmas tree ornament. The beauty and contrast of Yellow Heart with the other dark woods or acrylic is striking.
