New Ornament

I haven't had much lathe time for a while. Between honey dos and lawn work, most of my time is out of the shop. Today the temperature dropped down to a comfortable 70 (instead of 100+) and I spent some time on an ornament. I used some Yellow heart and acrylic, then started turning. I have to cut slowly with acrylic to avoid the small chips that can occur. Maybe there is a secret to avoid that issue, I haven't found it. Anyway I enjoyed creating another one.

Definitely one of the best so far

You may not be turning a lot but you haven't lost your touch!

Very nice Ron ! That is a very cool ornament.

Very nice Ron. The best luck I have had with acrylic is with a 1/4” bowl gouge. I get chipping and explosions with carbide tools. Might be because I try to go too fast.

Turning acrylics is not my favorite. Besides waste turnings going everywhere, chipping and it turns the area to one huge mess. Oh yes I use a vac and the suction hose is positioned above the turning. Next and the thing most don't think about.......the plastic dust and tiny pieces get into your chuck movement and other working parts on the tailstock. Not long after completing a piece I have to remove the vise and clean it.

I just visited an enlarged and remodeled Rockler store here in Denver. I didn't buy any more acrylic.
