Screen Spool

Recently decided that the screen tools needed to be with the actual screen spline.  Being that the spline need a spool to be on complicates storage in a 1 1/2 inch tall drawer.  Looking through the shop I found 2 of 4 boxes I made awhile back that would fit the bill.  Made the spool by taking a 1 1/2 piece of scrap pine and cutting in half.  Then made a channel on each piece 1/8 deep and glued it back together.  This will allow the threaded rod to go through to hold it together and give me something to turn the spool to wind it up later.  Once done I took to lathe and turned down to size.  Turned the ends from some 3/8 plywood and drilled 1/4 hole for the rod to go through.  One end got a nutsert to avoid having a full sized nut stick out the end.

With the spool made I went for simple to wind it.  Put my Cordless on low speed and wound the spline to the spool.  Meanwhile the holders were finally done in finishing room so they got installed.  Used hot glue as this was convenient and can be changed later if desired.  Fit is on the money.

Simple project nothing in the wow factor, but suits a need to store tools and supplies together for something I rarely need.  But when I do I would like to have it all in one spot.

All stored away and ready for use.

Great idea. Nice to have things labeled and together when the need arises.

Just in the last year we lost two of our woodturning club members. Last week we cleaned out the shop attic of the older member, 93. Took us 3 hours to get it all but the wood down and inspired me anew to divest my shop of some things I have not used in 10 years or more and maybe replace it with new stuff I will use within 5 years, more later on this maybe.

Simple and effective way to store a spool of whatever Gunny.

I am curious though, pilots toilet paper?  Is this a special type of tp? :BugEyeSmiley:  I've been in your shop... where would you use said special tp? :WonderScratch:  Or maybe I don't want to know...:o

My Dad was aircraft mechanic. In the cockpit they have a small printer.  These rolls of paper are very thin and fragile. They were named Pilots TP.  Use it for scratch paper to write the occasional rough drawing.

nicely made tools (not inexpensive, but will last a lifetime).  :)

Great idea. Every time I need to fix a screen I can never find anything and have to buy more.
