April 2, 20215 yr Popular Post An old classmate contacted me a couple months ago. She said she was about to die and that was heart wrenching. We caught up on other classmates and it was depressing to know that over half our class has expired. So, I am making a care package for her and I will post pictures of the contents later on another thread. But, the one I finished turning today, I wanted to show. Yes, it was totally made on my Shopsmith. I did learn a lesson which I may not remember tomorrow, but each stick needs to be as close as possible to the same size. Otherwise you will have problems. Here are a couple of pictures of one that I recovered with a chisel. Tomorrow, I will sand with 220 grit, apply a coat of water based poly, sand again with the same grit, apply a 3rd coat and then sand with 600 grit to smooth the finish and apply a light and final coat. Will get a picture of the care package when it is all assembled and ready to mail. I hope this puts a bright spot in her year. I had hoped to have this to her by Easter, but it is not going to happen. Will mail it the day after Easter. Edited April 2, 20215 yr by FlGatorwood
April 2, 20215 yr Popular Post So sorry about your classmate. I lost a classmate friend a couple of weeks ago and it really hurt. Would it be improper for me to ask about the construction of that cross? Maybe it's a solid block that had the cross mortised into it? It's something I might want to try my hand at doing.

Here is a some explanation of the process and Steve can add his observations to it too.

April 3, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Fred, thanks for asking. Interesting question. And, I really appreciate Dan stepping up and providing those links. Those are the same posts that started me in this process. I love the look on people's faces when they look at these. Dan, thank you for teaching and showing the process. As you see, I decided to make them free standing rather than a hanging ornament. Either way, they walk faster than I can make them. Next time, I will show the entire process. In the meantime, take a gander at this one. Here is a picture of the finished turning with about 4 coats of water based poly.
April 3, 20215 yr Author Popular Post I missed the edit time. I meant to say "thank you" to all who commented and for your words of encouragement. I really appreciate that.
