A rock and a hard place

Featured Replies

Have had a small walnut root ball for several months and decided yesterday to at least cut it. One piece seemed well suited for a hollow form. It had a crack but gives me a chance to test some powders to color epoxy and fill that crack. It turned out that the crack went almost full length but that did not interfere with hollowing like the rocks. First noticed at about 2 inches from the bottom. I think there were several smaller ones also. The big one cause me to have to resharpen two hss bits and destroy a Hunter bit.

that spec below the hollow form is the approximately thumbnail size rock.

Looks great but I think the rock is a formidable foe.  Digging it out seems to be the only option or leave it in and ruin more tools.  I did a root ball once and remember dulling tools even though there weren't any apparent rocks.

Rocks aside, I believe that will be a beautiful piece when you have it completed Gerald. :)

Ouch! I know finding things in a piece of wood is never fun, but rocks have to be at the top of the list of bad things.

Not quite as bad as finding metal fencing and posts imbedded inside the tree. DAMHIKT <_<

I had to go to drill press and drill around the rock so I could get it out and then clear sailing.
