Start of a new project to test working height of the new bench....

Featured Replies

So this afternoon I wanted to do a test run with the working height of the new bench set up with the lathe seems to be doing just fine.  Now that I can work longer pieces I decided to just throw on the hole piece of African Mohagany on the lathe and start rounding off the blank.   With the lathe running I will say the bench doesn't move what so ever so I think its got more than enough weight to it to include the 137 pounds of the lathe itself so I'm happy.  Yes I will be finishing out this project in the long run.  Id actually like to get one completed.  If you guys have any suggestions on this lengthier mill I'm starting I'm all ears thanks.

Where's that new roughing gouge.  Would have had that whole blank rounded out in minutes.

Sitting in its temporary spot I haven't set up the bench grinder as of yet.  That's the next item on the list of to dos.

I typically rough the entire piece round before starting to create the various diameters. Then make a story stick with the transition points/dimensions.

Yea that's what I am doing with it rounding it off.  Just was using the rod for length that I needed for the full project including tenons to see what kind of material I could afford to loose with it.

Got everything rounded out and re marked.  I think this one is going to be about as basic as it gets.  How ever its going to take me some time to get this one finished off I think I need to order a work piece rest for the lathe so that will be a bit.  I'll definately need that when it comes time to bore this one out that is the next step.  Glad I have that part off tool now.  So a lot less wasted on turning an end off the work piece.

Part of it I used the ewt rougher and some of it I used the roughing gouge but I think I'm going to need to get a smaller roughing gouge as well.  I haven't fully cleaned it up yet either.

Yep I'm lacking a spindle gouge at the moment.

I got as far as I could with the hollowing out of the grinder body.  Top is parted off.  I found out that I could spare to loose about a half inch of material on the bottom so I cut that off.  With the hollowing I got as far as I could with the 4 inch forstner bit extension sadly I ordered the wrong size extension I think the ones that I have are 3/8s the one I got apparently was 1/4 OOOPS so I'll have to order out for one of those today.

So I've gotten the body of the mill hollowed out finally.  My 10 inch extension got delivered as well as a small package of pepper corn to test once all together.  I think the longer mills are much easier to work out and do instead of the short ones I've found that you have more room for mistakes than you do with a smaller 6 inch one.  Especially now that I have the lathe bed space and length to do the longer mills.

Not only that as a double bonus I got my dust collection hood I'm not sure how I'm going to mount it as it wouldn't leave me much space between the wall and the lathe for work space either way at least I have it I'll have to get some reducers for it to hook into my shop vack hose.

Sanded everything all the way up to 400 grit.  No 600 grit paper unfortunately.  This is the first one that actually came out even and decently.    As well as having the first coating of stain on the piece.  This one I think is going to shine up extremely nicely.  Just wishing I had some sanding sealer how ever I don't so I'm working with what I have.IMG_1267.JPG.6327fc184d2d3061f8ef8dd3364040ea.JPG

Damned little screws the pepper mill kits give you so annoying.  Had some spare JB weld clear of course from the old knife handle days wound up using that for securing the end cap plates onto the mill body and blank.  1 hour cure time so I should be able to finish off this pepper grinder today and test it.  Lets just say I got extremely annoyed and frustrated with the tiny little screws they give you.

These crush grind kits are a little more expensive but don't use the screws. Another difference is the method(s) used to secure the mechanisms into the turning.
