February 19, 20215 yr Popular Post Been busy despite being limited to one arm only. Friends son Jacob wanted to learn some woodworking so he has been a big help during this time. Kid is like a sponge and has unlimited energy. Never mind the appetite. I get indigestion just watching him eat 2 pizzas as if they were a snack. Enjoy it now buddy!! Needed a tape holder for the finishing room. One of many things you discover you need available without that walk back to the main shop. So I designed this and put Jacob to work on edge banding the plywood and then a dado'd piece for a stiffener on the end that attaches to the window cabinet. He enjoyed messing with the dado stack. Thanks @Fred W. Hargis Jr for the recent gift of a brand new dado set. It has been used. Instead of turning dowels I opted for a easier approach iof cutting down some 2x4 stock and just rounding over the top edge where the tape roll makes contact when hanging. Not needed but Jacob was more than happy to get to use the router table. I mimicked the tape holder in the main shop as far as colors. Golden oak stain the body and the dowels got some oil based yellow paint. Again my helper has had a great time getting to do all that finish work. As this was his 2nd time with using poly his skill has greatly improved. No runs, nice and smooth, all is good. He did mention that yellow sucks to paint. Takes an extra coat or two and oil based tends to sag so you have to go back over it few times. Even so, no runs, sags or issues.

Kinda a give and take thing. I have been without use of one arm since the 21st of January accident at work so the help was welcome. This quarantine thing has him driving his parents up the wall so this has given them a welcome relief. Have gained 5 pounds watching him eat pizzas and drink Mountain Dew, by the liter.
February 19, 20215 yr Great job Gunny, and what I would call a win-win-win. I told my son that if he learned to work with his hands, he would never have to go hungry. In addition to the skills your guy is learning, the self confidence to tackle something new will serve him throughout his life. Kudos to you Gunny!
