When opening canned goods that are a thick consistency they don't pour from the can.  I have always stabbed the bottom with an old can opener to break the suction and the blob would come out without having to dig it out with a spoon.  I decided to make myself something that might be easier to use and this is what I came up with.

The HandyDandy can piercer.

I put the ball on the end to help keep my hand from slipping off and smashing into the can.  The hardware is made with stainless socket head cap screws.  I made the points from 5/32 welding rod.  I drilled the screws with a #24 drill bit and the points were a press fit into the screws.  I drilled and tapped the wood to accept the screws.

And as usual I didn't stop at one and figured I could give some away.

I also made a few more awls with some Purple Heart and some mystery wood that was pool table legs.  Might be a Mahogany species.

Pretty cool idea.

Indeed. I need something like that all the time since cans are now made so you can't cut the bottom off. I'm using the can opener as you described. Good thinking.

Great idea Dan. I'm always impressed when you get on a roll.

Your wheels are always turning Dan:TwoThumbsUp:

Very cool idea Dan ! I'm wondering how to make the tips without a welder. Maybe use old Allen wrenches, cut the angle off and grind to a point ?

I didn't weld anything.  I used welding rod that I used a Dremel tool to cut to length.  Welding rod can be purchased on small quantities.  The allen wrenches or anything hard would work.  Old drill bits come to mind since there seem to be plenty of them around too.  Drill the hole and put the bit in flute first with some epoxy to hold them in place.  Maybe grind the tips flat to keep them from pushing through the wood.
