Setting Annual Goals

Featured Replies

Since I retired 3-1/2 yrs. ago I have been setting woodworking goals for myself. Goals may include taking a class, learning a new technic, completing a certain project, learning different tools with the computer, etc.  This yr. my goal was to have better organization in my shop and have better dust collection.  Boy, did I fail.  I did little organizing my shop and only just started on the dust collection.

I enjoy designing wood working tools for my use.  I started building a router cabinet in Nov. 2018 and it still is not done.  I wanted the cabinet to have a unique look, be able to store my Porter Cable dove tail jig and have the dust collection system be inside

the cabinet.  The cabinet is complete, and I only have concept designs for the duct collection.  This project may see another birthday.

To support the shop dust collection system goal, the dust collector design is being tweaked and I am waiting on the major components to arrive to start fabrication.  Many of the dimensions need to be verified using the components.

My 2021 goals include 1) finishing this yr. goals, have detail written plans, that my wife and I both agree on, for remodeling the patio enclosure and adding on to the garage, and designing a child’s toy.  I want to be able to produce toys and give them to the annual local Marine Corp Toys-for-Tots Program.  I am sure with my current commitments and being easily sidetracked, some of this will not be accomplished.  Oh well, there is always next year.

Cabinet looks good.

Shop organizing eats time, alot of it.  Take small sections to get done rather than stare at overall picture.

Fifteen my left toenail, more like a metric ton in a 12 ounce bottle.

My annual goal is to survive this first year of the 21st century and move on to better years. 2020 has been a year to forget!

goals???  did someone say GOALS?!

thankfully, our renovations of the house all are done, after 10 years of effort, my shop got built 5 years ago, and we just paid off the loan we took to build the shop this week.  so debt free (ok, that was a goal)!  yay.

no woodworking projects planned at the moment, i've designed and built everything we wanted for our house (and designed other things that i've either sold or given away over time), so pretty quiet in the shop for now.

and with the cost of lumber, even piddling around with scrap wood or 2x4s isn't cheap anymore.

i solved my dust collection long ago, got 4 shop vacs, one dedicated to the TS, one shared between the planer and router, one near the main work table for general clean up and use with the spindle sander, and one for the bandsaw and general clean up near the front of the shop.  empty them as needed into a large trash can, toss the bag of sawdust when full with regular trash.

allows  me to change or move things without having to worry how it will affect a fixed in place central dust system, as the dust system is not centralized.

do what works for you.

Dust collection has never been a problem in my shops. What little I've been able to collect from the 'Smiths, sanders and, planer goes through a covered waste can venturi and, then outside. The rest finds temporary residence on the floor, awaiting the broom.

My intermediate goal is to find and organize all the tools. But first is completing demo of a room (Kennel?) built inside the shop, and repairing the siding where the previous owner made dog doors and one hole where he hung a swamp cooler for the dogs. Then, the tools can be set in place. Then, rewiring is in order, followed by insulation. I'm shooting for April.

My woodworking goals are set by someone else so I won't get bored I guess 😊 Personal goal this year is the 1000 and 1500 yard Milk Jug Challenge with my M1A carbine.

Goals are for hockey. I just lay out for some parts and hope I still remember what they are for when I get the time to do whatever it was I was planning. Now where was I?
