Little bitty birds

Added some little birds to a few of the birdhouse ornaments. They are quick and fun to turn but gluing them up and on is kind of tedius.

We have a club member who turns birds off center but that does not hold a candle to your tiny birds. Have you thought about using a white wood and dyeing them in colors?

Steve, those are labor intensive.  And, way beyond my patience to make 2 pieces, then glue together and then to glue to the ornament.  That is awesome.

Mostly I've just tried to rely on contrasting woods to make them interesting. Mike Peace also makes them and actually does a glue up to simulate the wings. I also have a lady FB friend who gives them a lot of detail and glues on eyes and a beak, that's just crazy!!

The turning goes very quickly but my problem is, this time of years my fingers get really slick and I drop about as many as I get assembled. Don't even bother to look for them, there are little bird heads all over the shop!!

Pretty sure it's this set here. Since then I've invested in a collet chuck and prefer that.

Larry note this one has dedicated  1 inch 8 tpi. Insert chucks allow use on larger lathes and sell easier if you decide to get rid of one. Other than that the G3 is a good chuck for mini lathes and package is a good way to get jaws cheaper "IF" you plan to use all of them.

 

Found this set at Klingspor for 183.99.
