November 14, 20205 yr Popular Post Thought I was done making ornaments for the year but I had some special requests for a few more. So, 16 in total this batch. Had never put a hat on a birdhouse ornament before but I kind of like the look of them.
November 14, 20205 yr Those are fantastic, Steve! I can't wait to get back into the shop and do some turning.

They are a decent chuck but if I were a first time buyer now I would definitely go with a Vicmarc or Oneway chuck. They are 1a and 1b IMO with the supernova chucks a distant third. On these ornaments I also used a collet chuck as I'm often working close to the chuck and a collet chuck is much friendlier to errant fingers. My collet chuck is a Beall. November 15, 20205 yr Popular Post Steve are those hollowed out inside or is there just a hole drilled in them. Very impressive. We need the start calling you the ornament king.

We need the start calling you the ornament king. Rusty The globes are hollowed, usually to about an eighth of an inch give or take. The birdhouse ornaments are drilled out with a 3/4" core box router bit. Depending on the shape they may or may not have any hollowing done on them.
November 15, 20205 yr Those are great Steve, and thanks for the info that you so freely share with us

I blew it, guy had a Nova G3 with a few different jaw sets, and the dual thread (RH/LH) 1" x 8TPI on C-List for $60.00 I've got a collet chuck, but I'll bet it's nothing like yours.

Wow! I'd jump on that deal in a heartbeat, the chuck by itself 150-160 I'd guess, extra jaws add up quickly too. One really nice thing about the Nova chucks is the jaws fit across their line. So, if you ever pick up a supernova2 you'll already have different jaws for it as well. Good deal! My problem is I have three supernovas and several sets of jaws to go with them. I don't want to start over and invest in a complete new setup.

November 19, 20205 yr I have a Nova G3 with a few sets of jaws. It is a nice little chuck. I use it on the Shopsmith. I do mostly spindle turning. But, the Nova chuck is excellent for turning pins and those little bird houses. For the money, it is a great asset to have in your arsenal.
