Carving these 2 girls

Kinda unchartered territory in more ways than one.....IMG_20201104_121240358.jpg.7805d82244c185d23f5a5eaafc4dbd65.jpg

Once I put the pattern on and do the scroll sawing the next step in my carving is to take the 2 girls over to the band saw and cut the tops of many pieces down before I start grinding the wood as my kind of carving saving the wear and tear on the little 1/8" bits and mostly grinding using the 1 x 42" belt sander.

Absent minded for I didn't study the picture good enough and didn't even realize the girl on the right side is somewhat set back more than the one on the left...This is the main reason I post many times during the carving episode......so I can sit and try to figure out what I did wrong IMG_20201104_121144703.jpg.3441aaf7ae36c8247e2174492f273392.jpg

I also will have to  repair the left leg on the girl on the right side of the picture!!! Or maybe I could call her an amputee and add a crutch....

And I don't know what I was thinking when I put the shoulder up in the hair on the girl on the left side.

This taking a picture and trying to turn it into a 3 D type of carving just doesn't come out the same as a person wants it to look?????

IMG_20201104_120525818.jpg.734cc63a4ed261df2d101c3ac7113878.jpg

You see I will have a problem on both pictures after I get the hand cut out so it will be up in the air...then I will have her chest to repair and make it like her blouse that wa holding a cold drink with a straw going to her mouth and wife thought is looked like so beer can so no for the preachers house?????

Maybe I will run in to something different to show in my learning steps in a day or two.

I must have thought the girl on the left side needed 3 boobs for this is what it is looking like I started out to do????

Another thing is I cut the girls in to too many pieces to start with and since then I have already glued a bunch of them back together........

It is interesting to see how you go from point A to point B in your progress Jess.

Cal I have so many mistakes in the cutting the pieces in the wrong places it would be faster to start over with a picture and all the scroll sawing.

I can see where some experience really helps and common sence, cents, since does play in there somewhere.....if I just stop long enough to remember those hard earned episodes of the past...

I am leaving the hardest part till the very last and that is faces.............and I can already see these two girls will turn into men in womens clothes with scare crow faces....

Wife says do it for this is the only way I can get better......oh sure!!!!

Well Jess, with the disjointed arm and amputee you have a cubism piece of artwork going?  I think the girl on the right looks to either have a cigarette or maybe holding a hookah?  Can I say that on this site?  Hookahs are legal, though not what I really thought :o

I've no doubt but that it will be terrific when you are done!

Cal she has a straw in her mouth and is holding a big container with her hands and I'm trying to remove them for wife thought it looked like she was smoking. Just a few days ago I went through Picasso's life as a painter. Your girl fits exactly..Did you paint that?IMG_20201105_181713408.jpg.8778fa9a028244f3e82b708833ee2aeb.jpgIMG_20201105_181705821.jpg.d2dd2709716abb7a31801df96e2901c6.jpg

I can't even draw a set of boobs then trying to carve a set is impossible.

I knew it was a straw Jess, I was just messing with you :)

If you take the drink and straw away, the arms might look odd in that position.  Maybe holding one of your flowers?

  • Author

I never thought holding a flower?? good idea....I will try. I tried cutting the underside of the left hand away like in the bottom picture but that presented a boob problem. So now I have lower that arm and hand so its back touching her body...All of these trials and errors represents lots of extra labor but hey.

I also have invented  a new way to use the 1 x 42" belt. I don't know of any one in their right mind would do this for its real tricky but hey its another way of reducing the sanding time on un even surfaces!!!

I will try to get Bernadette to take a picture of  what takes place that is completely different than the regular use of that sander...they are my most used sanders in the shop which I have three of them but only utilize 2 for the space is too crowded already..

+1. It’s fascinating for me to see how he gets from a picture to his finished artwork.

Waiting to see this Jess, I hope it's not one of those "here, hold my beer while I do this" type things? :D

It is fascinating for me to watch an artist, and Jess fits that for sure.

I'm thinking an artist must have way too much time on their hands for each thought of a process in trying to put together these two girls are not there when needed..I was a few days in to these girls and trying to change one holding a large drink with a straw in her mouth in to something easier to make look right and had spent a few different things and nothing I was happy with worked and Cal suggested those two hands are in the right place to be holding some flowers!!! problem solved but I didn't think it up...

So Picasso's quote fits " Good artist copy; great artist steal."

My definition of a good to great artist is if that persons creation is hanging on the wall or displayed somewhere then the stranger walking up not even knowing of that item is  standing there gazing at it is spell bound and deep in thought at that item...and can not get over how great that item is.... .....This is exactly the thought I had the first time I saw a 1955 chevy two door hard top. One year out of high school and I was convinced, this is one the car I had to have. Mom says you are out of school so get a job and you can buy one.... I did and 1956 rolled around and the 1956 chevy looked even better, so I bought  one.

No one artist can please every person but it sure would help money wise if he could.

Cal beer was on my mind during my young life but the day we opened the go-cart track  I realized I was the one who had to run it was the day the beer was put on the back burner and forgotten about..  Another habit that came to a screeching halt was smoking.  Driving down the road one day about 38 years old I thought what a dumb thing to do and I went from a 2 pack a day to zero cigarettes. Then about a week later I could not stand the cigarette smoke.

What is the latest on these beautiful carved girls, Dad?

You know how hard it was to bring Gracie in to this world. Well, for someone who can't even spell face, I am now trying to build some out of wood... A world of difference compared to leaves and vines and those things I been carving... for the last 4 years....those things don't have feelings and expressions and moods that needs to be added in with the carvings so they will show...

So we get all these books................. Words and pictures

Maybe I now understand what Hank Williams was trying to say about that wooden Indian who just stood there and never said a word...

I think faceless portraits are interesting and an attainable art. Check out what Pinterest has on Faceless Portraits

Sherri I already been thinking about nothing for a face but a very large smile. Kinda like you two do when I see you.  Like if Picasso were to have made it.

I turned my thinker on some time ago for I knew this would end up being a big problem and not being able to complete these girls..

I am putting the final touches on moms Nativity thingy's right now..

Is it really a portrait if it is faceless?

I need a phone camera that takes faceless selfies.

Gene did you get the pictures to load without plugging them in?

I have my two girls on a vacation right now so maybe when they get back I might get back on that problem. I did try the Picasso faces and my renditions would not have ever worried Picasso about me horning in on his lively hood....

Nope. But, it's no biggie.

Sherri, thank you for the suggestion. I use facebook more than anywhere else to get my inspirations. I am still trying things to hide what I can't do right or at least to my satisfaction. In the picture the girl on the left is sporting some glasses that helps hide part of her face and am now trying to make a pair of glasses is something else....

Sherri you might explain what you did to get my phones pictures to load on to my computer without having to use the wire from the phone to the computer.  Do you know how far away from the computer will the pictures load. Last week we were in Abilene and was going to take a picture there then see if it loaded but forgot to take any pictures.. but we figured it would load once we got in to the house to do its thing? Did you have to buy the little blue thingy on the bottom of my screen for the pictures to load without help.
