How do you hang this thing up....

Every shop could use a 4-in-hand rasp/file....but it needs a place to sit, until called for..

Chisel shaped objects, at least the 3 in front...the other was rehabbed long ago...clean, sharpen, and re-do them handles..

May "refine" the other two....Scratch Awls were also cleaned, sharpened up, and a coat of finish brushed on...

Bench has been cleaned up...

1720666991_Benchcleanupprogessmade.JPG.c738898938fb8913bdff588101e91f7e.JPG

Spent a lot of time, rehabbing about half of those chisels..

1547338792_BenchcleanupBeaterBrigade.JPG.33e5b129f254709dc0e7b47c6b93cc91.JPG

And, after the other half is done...it would be kind of a shame to just toss them into a drawer, some where...or the Toy Chest..

1338613333_Benchcleanupleftdoor.JPG.4c6c6e01a23358a43b0aa3ce9b286d8b.JPG

Nope, no more room here on the left...

662089330_Benchcleanuprightdoordetails.JPG.a1f33ce5ad2622caf5b476876b711ac0.JPG

Nor over on the right....rack in the center?

1831546819_Benchcleanupfullracks.JPG.8389b5d2eafa7a833301e04f2242ab6c.JPG

Hmmm...nor on the "floor" of these box...

1608773655_Benchcleanuptoyboxdoorright.JPG.557b3dac3a670bcdaad179b6d76e2dde.JPG

I do have a bit of Poplar left over....maybe build a case to hold a few chisels?

May just close the doors on the tool chest..:ChinScratch:

1873795803_BenchcleanupToyBox.JPG.a8e53b58cc8bfa4aacaa909e38a6c08e.JPG

Hmmm, don't want to hang anything on these doors...I need the elbow room:rolleyes:

One nice thing about the tool well....if I happen to "lose" a pencil...:WonderScratch:

1412949851_Benchcleanuppencilstash.JPG.e15d539052448be7bbe703dc0e998d29.JPG

The Tool Well is the first place they will go and hide in.   The old candle?   Lube for the bottom of planes, edge of saws, and screws...

I  thought about just adding another rack for the chisels along the back of the bench...:ChinScratch:

151904264_Benchcleanuponthelevel.JPG.588d73a04718979dacaa01d7f8f7c026.JPG

But.....then I'd have to reach over the existing rack....may stick the 2 levels into a drawer, though...until called for..

So...will keep rehabbing those chisels...and maybe one block plane....stay tuned:cowboy:

Soooo, how do you know what needs sharpening?

Usually while I am using some items....they no longer cut as nice....set aside, and get another that is sharp.....when done with a project, I can go back and sharpen the dull one up...

Edged items that come into the shop...will get a sharpening done, so they are ready to go, if and when I need them....

Sometimes, like after a project is done, I pull a shop Maintenance Day ( or week, depends on the size of the project) so everything is ready for the next project.

I want items that are sharp enough to do the job I need done with them....that's the key.."Sharp Enough".    Spending hours of drudgery trying to get that  "perfect" edge...isn't getting any work done.    Wood doesn't care IF it could see itself, right before the edge goes by.

Have 2 grinders, and a sanding (6" x 36") center...don't have the room for anything  else....

Ok...there was a plastic tub I brought home from Fred's place.....I thought I have all the little block planes rehabbed.....

Roooooh....Kaaaay.  Needs just a new iron, right?:WonderScratch:

Well, I was getting tired of playing "My dovetails are better than YOURS"...figured I could just rehab this little critter...:ChinScratch:

"Hide yer eyes, Mabel!"  :BugEyeSmiley: Iron was one that came from a Yard sale Stanley No.3   ( yes, they were using it IN that plane!:WonderScratch:)  No eccentric lever (no big deal)Cap iron was a pot metal, blunt instrument.   Crud and rust everywhere...:DevilLaughing:

770921338_BlockPlaneRehabtroublespots.JPG.fe697375c7dc70ad97bcf88892272895.JPG

Wire wheel to clean things up..

868134853_BlockPlaneRehaballcleanedup.JPG.04f30f601bef599d94f0b97e88ee6962.JPG

Which left getting the iron sharp....and flat..as it was neither....even had a back bevel...on a bevel up plane?  :BangingHead: sanding center, grinder, and the buffer wheel.....Hone on two oils stones, and some 2000 grit paper...then the buffer wheel to polish....then that blunt object.:MachineGun:...Front end, that "helps" direct shaving out of the plane....was more like a road block....shavings would hit the "wall" and just fold up like the bellows on an Accordion...:ArguingSmileys:

Sanding disc to bevel it...no longer an 1/8" tall wall...polished the underside a bit, for a better fit to the iron.

2016740038_BlockPlaneRehabcapirontunedup.JPG.2d526c407239a5c0c0177ba229e0497d.JPG

tain't "pretty", no shiny Brass, nor Bronze..:WhoMe:..set up a test track...tune the plane a bit...:ChinScratch:

592629190_BlockPlaneRehabtestdrive.JPG.1685a7120fd4f100a78ccee23b7da47c.JPG

Seems to work just fine.   Might just call it done...only took an hour of "drudgery"..

300173560_BlockPlaneRehabrehabdone.JPG.04142f4682b57b13999819eb1453fd9d.JPG

Stanley No. 9-1/2....Might be from the 1960s?    I look into the spare iron box, and see IF I have a newer iron...:WonderScratch:

Rehabbed handles on 3 chisels have a finish on them, now..waiting on drying time....then see about making a case for them....and even some more Hand Cut Dovetails...LOL

Stay tuned:cowboy:
