Hut Crystal Coat

Featured Replies

I have used Hut Crystal coat for years to achieve an easy beautiful instant friction finish. The last time I got some it was $16 for a small 6 oz bottle. I was going to order some more and I see the price is now $27.  One time someone suggested I make my. own. (It could have also been in the old Wood forum) They combined 2 or 3 ingredients and claimed it worked as good as or better than Hut, for a fraction of the price.

Any ideas?

Found this on the AAW forum-

t was as follows, 1/3 3#cut shellac, 1/3 BLO, and 1/3 alcohol. Like the Hut product it must be shaken before and during use because it is an emulsion.

I think that is what Eddie Castelin called shine juice.

Well you beat me to it. If you have not used it before I consider it to be tedious. Needs many applications to get to that "french Polish" gloss finish. I only used it once and maybe I should try again on a different wood.

By the way that bowl still has that high gloss finish.

I have used HUT years ago then found I liked this Shellawax better.  Personal preference only here.  Just seems to hold up better and keep a nice shine.  BUT, it is pricey @ $32 a bottle.

BLOTo be honest it sounded Very much like it was some sort of fad drug.:D

Then I remembered what it was-_- and Capt Eddy gave a great tutorial on the subject, (thanks  Figatorwood). Since I am still in self imposed isolation from Big box, big crowd stores, I looked around my shop to see what I had already. I remembered a friend moving a couple of years ago and gave me a box of finishes/solvents that he did not want to take along, because of flammability. I had some alcohol and believe it or not, I found some BLO and Shellac in the box that he gave me. I mixed usp a batch in the the old Hut container. After a good shaking, I tried it out and was well pleased at my results. I have a beautiful shine. The big question is....will it last? I have used some other products to spray over Hut, to help it retain its glow and I may have to do that here as well.

Thans for all the help

Hut and Shellawax are both are friction polish and do need replenishment but any spray other than shellac will not last.

On the shellac in OB's Shine Juice he uses a 2# cut from a can if you mix your own just use double the amount of a 1# cut and leave off the alcohol.

I've read of a similar formula using beeswax, caranuba wax, and I think it was BLO.  Has anyone tried that?  I assume it was 1 1 1 ratio the same as Capt Eddy was talking about, but heated in a double boiler and came out more like a paste wax than a liquid.
