Popular Post steven newman Posted August 16, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted August 16, 2020 Friday and Sat. , The games was afoot! Not much in the budget for the 2 days, either...only had $12 in me pocket. First day? Well, one place had these. That strange looking screwdriver is a MAC.....$2 so far...drove just outside of town...said there was "tools"...dug through a "tray" of rusty tool shaped objects...didn't NEED any foot long screwdrivers...but..nose was itching a bit, dug down a bit further... I tend to shake hollow handles..sometimes there are bits inside..That North Bros ( pre-Stanley) No. 41? yep it made a bit of noise ( pun intended) 6 bits IN the handle, another in the chuck....Fifty cents a piece for these 2.....didn't need the entire tray, anyway.. Survived the storm Friday night....Saturday morning, had some things to do..then returned to the first sale from Friday..to see what was left over... 26" long, 10ppi cross cut Disston D-8....made about 1955-56 era....when HK Porter had just bought out Disston...still a nice, comfy saw to use... Just no brass bolts..not a biggie. price? Hmm...yeah. went looking at a couple other Saturday only sales....lots of clothes, no tools... Well, to the north is the village of Belle Center....they had a 2 day village wide sale going on.....drove around a few sales...nose was calm....was going to stop at a place for some Ice Cream ( was a very hot day) when the nose went haywire....tables, and a wagon..filled with..tools. A bit of digging around... There was supposed to be a fourth chisel in the set ( 12mm) Looked over the pipe clamps the fellow had...three had "issues", settled for the fourth one.. Will need to soak those threads in PBblaster...should be ok after that...so, how much did he want? $3.... Then went and got the ice cream...and then went back home. BTW: the first sale's location? Seems that Friday night storm had split an old, BIG Maple tree out in front of the property...landing in the street. This morning, when we came back..they had things off the street, and were turning it into firewood.... That pipe clamp? 1/2" Pony..with plenty of pipe.. Should come in handy? That 8" square?...well, it seems to be cleaning up quite well.. Along with these other two items.....took a while, and also managed to get the bit free from that Yankee chuck. The c clamps are 2" ones. That "chef's hat" screwdriver is a Goodell Pratt Co. item, for a tool kit for "motorcars". The square? Stanley No. 20, 8"...with steel hardware, instead of brass? Except for the brass wear strip. Cute little buggers, ain't they? Total for the weekend? ( not counting ice cream) $6.50 I'm not cheap, merely Frugal Cal, Fred W. Popular Post Ron Altier Posted August 16, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted August 16, 2020 I had to quit hauling the "good stuff". I am out of room and now must only get tools that I need and use. I avoid garage sales with tools, I'm afraid I'll see that tool that makes me think "I'll need that some day or I've always wanted one of those" It's easier when I think of the TV show about hoarders. The only area where I do continue to seek value is lumber. I still see and buy some on rare occasions, but it is getting harder to find. Most wood for sale is low quality or just not real. Most people selling that stuff don't know the difference. FlGatorwood, Gerald, Larry Buskirk and 4 others 6 1 Quote

Popular Post Smallpatch Posted August 16, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted August 16, 2020 (edited) Steven, that first wide screw driver in the fore ground is an old tappet adjusting tool for the old 6 cylinder chevy motors.. A guy had to learn how to keep the tool on top of the screw while the motor was running. You had one hand holding the adjusting tool in one hand and a feeler gage and a combination wrench to loosen the nut in the other hand then slip the feeler gage in the gap as you set the correct gap on the tappets.... I still have the last version of that wide screw driver with the two tips hanging down on each side.....This last version has a spring inside the handle and the tool will go up and down with the movement of the tappet kinda automatically as a person adjusted to tappets. This last version is a real antique and it will bring 1,000 from collectors but I would let mine go today for 500. Popular Post steven newman Posted August 16, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 16, 2020 Afraid mine doe not have a spring inside....Solid as a rock. That Fifty cent saw? Seems to be about the time HK Porter bought out Disston...~1955 or so...well.. After a little rehab work this afternoon... FlGatorwood, Harry Brink, HARO50 and 3 others 6 Quote
Smallpatch Posted August 16, 2020 Report Posted August 16, 2020 The last model has a plastic handle. and to do away with adjustable tappets they went to the hydraulic style tappets! Cal, steven newman, Gunny and 1 other 3 1 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted August 17, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 17, 2020 That 1/2" Pony pipe clamp.....soak the rusty threads in PBBlaster....hammer on the end....dab of 3in1 oil....Metric Cresent wrench to add leverage,,,was soon cleaning off the now freed up threads with a wire wheel...re-oiled them....and placed into the clamp rack..Will have to see what tomorrow will bring as far as rehab the tools go... steven newman Posted August 18, 2020 Author Report Posted August 18, 2020 Ok, these 3 chisels needed cleaned up... Handsome, ain't they, Not much I could do about that rust spot in the logo of the center chisel....without removing the logo (and the size marking) But.. Best I can do. They were also sharpened up... Well, there is a small slice in one of my fingers....never felt a thing...was paring end grain with the 18mm chisel. I had cleaned up the old North Bros. No. 41.. But, there is a problem... That is a bolt sticking in there...with a wallowed out hole...and a dent in the collar. Besides a broken spring inside.....will keep it around for parts...and those 7 bits. Other than two hand plane tune-ups this morning..that has been it for today... Fred W. Hargis Jr, Cal, HARO50 and 1 other 4 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted August 26, 2020 Author Popular Post Report Posted August 26, 2020 Besides a $10 grinder.. At one sale....I did a bit of shopping at a Barn Sale...even had a "shopping basket" to use.. Screwdrivers were free, BTW......One handle was trashed, chisel on the right. Chisel on the left was too pitted to use, handle was good, though...had another such chisel in storage...swapped out a couple handles, straightened the green screwdriver's shaft, and cleaned a few edges up.. Bevel edge chisel has GERMANY stamped on the blade...3/4" wide. Haven't found any markings on the 3/8" wide firmer, mortise chisel...yet. The new grinder was set into the place of the old Craftsman grinder...not without incident.. Old nail was in the way of my fishing bolts to attach the grinder to the bench plank. Had my Tetanus shots 2 years ago...and have a tube of goop to apply...blood thinners makes for a bit of a mess, anyway... Got tired of the old Monarch vise being tucked behind stuff, where I couldn't really make much use of it....so.. Hardwood (Ash) cleat, screwed (3) to a 3/4" thick plywood plate. 3 bolts to attach the vise to the plate.. And this 30+ pound vise can now be set up where needed...or just set over on a shelf... Monarch ( Lion's head) No. 215, 4" vise..made in 10-45 ( oct 1945) Late Father-in-law's Uncle had bought this new....been passed down to me. The old grinder? Is now a buffer... Same idea as the vise...attach the grinder/buffer to a 3/4" thick plate, which is then screwed down to a cleat... I can then set this back on a shelf, when not needed... A David Weaver, over on Woodcentral is showing how to achieve a Unicorn Edge on edged tools like chisels and plane irons....whichever of these 2 wheels doesn't work for that, will get replaced with a wire wheel.....There IS a power strip behind the bench...needed for overhead lights, and the bandaw.....and now this buffer. Just getting the shop back in order, from all the projects, this past year... HARO50, lew, Gerald and 3 others 6 Quote
