October 2, 20214 yr Author Popular Post Thanks, Paul! Yes, that Curly Maple is amazing. Wait until you see the finished piece - that curl really pops! Here are the shelves in the drying rack in my 'box room' where all my shipping supplies and photography gear resides. The drying rack allowed me a way to store the shelves for the finish to cure and yet take up very little room while being out of our way - The finished legs; I love the sapwood in that one leg! This is his audio room before the rack was assembled and I have to say it sounds simply amazing. His cables are pure silver and cost over a grand each! Finished Curly Maple top shelf, gorgeous curl in this! The assembled rack and he chose to have the sapwood showing on the front right leg (that's what I was hoping for) - He said it will take a couple of weeks for him to have time to get all the gear on the shelves and get it moved back into place. Assuming he takes a good enough photo I'll post it here. Thanks for checking out this build!
October 2, 20214 yr Popular Post Some nice unit you have put together. Will the top be just left empty as a table? Would be a shame to cover that curl. Also why use 8/4 for this? Seems overkill to me but to me that is a lot of curly platters😀

He asked for a really stout unit and showed me a photo of a smaller one that I could see had 8/4 shelves. Given the weight of his amp I understand why he wanted it this stout. It was truly a bear to handle but I think the thicker shelves are in proportion to the design and scale of the piece. And, like all projects, I ordered more than I ended up using because I didn't want to try and find some at the last minute so I now have a fairly decent piece of 8/4 Curly Maple for other projects.
October 3, 20214 yr Popular Post Real craftsmanship and beautiful lumber. The appearance is wonderful.
October 3, 20214 yr Popular Post That is a work of art David. Thank you for coming back to finish it up for us! I would like to see how it fits in his space, so please get that pic for us...

October 6, 20214 yr Author Thanks, Guys! It was a real privilege to be able to work with that wood and see how it turned out. I have a large piece left over so now I need to come up with another project for some 8/4 Curly Maple. And I still have some Purpleheart, as well. We'll see...
October 10, 20214 yr Author Popular Post As promised, here are a couple of photos of the completed audio rack with gear in place -
October 10, 20214 yr When you said the client was a serious audiophile, you may have understated things slightly! Really well done, BTW!.
October 10, 20214 yr Popular Post It's too bad that your beautiful work has to be sullied with black boxes and wires.
October 10, 20214 yr That looks like some serious gear to be sure. Your piece compliments it beautifully
October 10, 20214 yr That is by far the best use of curly maple I have ever seen ! The simplicity in the style allows the curly maple to be the focus and I agree the audio gear merely hides the maple. Too bad he couldn’t afford a decent system lol. That quality of curly maple hasn’t been available here in quite a while and the last time I saw anything close it was 15-20 dollars a bf. Well done 👍 Paul
October 10, 20214 yr Author Thanks, Paul! The hardest part of getting that Curly Maple is that they almost always have it in 48" or shorter lengths and I needed 52" plus. Also, finding boards that had the same shading and all in 8/4. I buy from Kevin at Curly Maple Wood and have for years. He's great to work with and even though it took a bit for him to find what I needed he came through again. Edited October 10, 20214 yr by difalkner

Hard to find the curly maple anywhere else with consistency . I have also got some good stuff fro Keim lumber.

October 11, 20214 yr Author Popular Post The lacquer flashes off rather quickly and can be touched about 10 minutes after spraying. Shelves this heavy can be handled within about 30 minutes. But since I couldn't handle these by myself to carry through the house without hitting something I waited until Sandy got home and we moved them together. By then they had about 6 hours of curing time and were no problem at all to handle so I did this for three days in a row.
