July 18, 20205 yr Popular Post Morning trip, before it gets too hot and sticky (stinky?) outside....spent $10, and a 10 minute drive each way. Feeding Frenzy when we got there...LONG gravel lane back to the place. One shed had fishing supplies, house had antiques. In front of the house was the usual clothes, shoes, and hats. Mainly Hunting and fishing gear. There was a line-up out in the yard, of snowblowers, mowers, and other wheeled objects ....then there was a table and a second shed..... Tub on the table. Another full of wrenches, and full of pliers, another full of screwdrivers....as for the shed.. Mainly a LOT of power tools. Lots of Mechanic's stuff...but, there was 6 items I cleared off.. 6" (3) 12"(1) and a pair of 18" clamps Not too bad of a morning?
July 18, 20205 yr Author Popular Post As for those rusty bits....found a 3/8" drive extension, to hold the bit, then used the wire wheel on the grinder.... Seemed to clean up nicely... BTW: That sale is supposed to go on through tomorrow. US 68 N. 1/2 way between CR 37, and St Rt 274...be on the west side of the road. Starts at 0900....
July 21, 20205 yr Author Popular Post As for the clamps? Already sitting in the "clamp rack" Waiting for work.. I figured I saved over $20....not too bad of a deal?
July 25, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Another weekend, another Estate Sale raided... Spent $18 this time around....mostly on one jack plane....and..I turned down a "whale tail" #3.... But, for some reason..was unable to set this back down onto the table....maybe it was the labels? Or, that nothing was missing or broken...price? Will know more, once I get it cleaned up. Was needing a few smaller c clamps... About 2-1/2" ones...@ 2 for a dollar? Which leaves the last dollar bill of the morning.. Disston & Sons, 28" long, 5-1/2ppi, thumbhole handled rip saw....the "8" is inside the "D" in the readable etch....etch dates this as before 1917. Spent $1 for it. yes, I was wearing my mask this IS Ohio, after all... Not too bad of a morning?
July 25, 20205 yr Popular Post Nice haul Steve! I even wear my mask "Curb Shopping" Except mine makes me look like an "Old Time Stagecoach Robber"
July 26, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Well....clamps have been cleaned up Bottom 2 are marked as "Unbreakable"...seems the old guy had been using these near a welder...lots of spatter to grind off. As for the Jack plane? Need to work on the handles, yet...and sharpen the iron. everything else has been cleaned up....may do a thread about this rehab.... IF anyone wants to read along.... Haven't started on the saw....yet....getting the "easy stuff" done first....

July 26, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Right now, I am trying to get a bunch of wooden parts milled up into a box...2 hours so far today in the shop...will see how the day goes....once the bench is cleared, I can start on that Jack plane rehab.....I hope.
July 26, 20205 yr Popular Post I love the look of the thumb hole saws and have cleaned up a few. That should Clean up to be a nice one. Handle looks great!
July 27, 20205 yr Author Hmmm..ve haft verk to do... I don't think this is what they mean by a "Toothed" iron....more like a Snaggletooth....might take longer than the usual 15 minutes..
August 2, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Jack plane is done, and being put to work... Along with it's older brother..Sargent #414c. IF I can get this wooden box done, and off the bench.. I can start on rehabbing the Disston D8 Rip saw....
August 9, 20205 yr Author Waiting on paint to dry...decided to clean up that old rip saw.. Brass was removed, and polished up. Handle was removed..paint splats scraped off, 220 grit to LIGHTLY sand the good areas. Load up a paint brush with 3in1 oil...and give the wood a good rub down... Saw plate: Fresh squares of 220 grit for the sander..one to remove the rust and crud, second to clean up after the first...then do the other side the same way. Then a square of 2,000 grit paper on the sander..and polish up the steel... Photos...? Stamped as a 5-1/2 ppi.. Tried to match how Disston had "clocked" the slots.. Tooth line has a slight curve to it (breasted?) Saw is a LONG one, compared to the 26" D-115 I have.. D8 is 28" of very big teeth. Test drive? About 8 strokes...a little operator error was seen.. Was at a bad angle to run the saw in...saw starts easy enough, cuts FAST ( don't get your finger in it's way) $1 saw...just might be a keeper..
