Passive speaker for iPhone

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Very little of this was done on the CNC but since I usually post here I figured why not... please move it if y'all want.

Sandy listens to Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron (www.livingwaters.com) sharing the Gospel every Saturday morning on YouTube while she makes our salads for the week so I made a passive speaker for her iPhone (and for her birthday). Curly Maple, Gaboon Ebony, and Curly Redwood, French polish finish. The difference in sound is very obvious - it’s richer, more balanced, and a little louder.

Cold bending the Curly Redwood; I resawed to the point I needed and then soaked it in hot water.  After three times and bending successfully more each time I cut the pieces I needed and then glued them together.

Fitting the curved deflector; the square is just a prop to hold the deflector in place for the photo.

Enjoy!

Beautiful and brilliant!  I love the mix of woods used.  Great excuse for keeping scraps!

I don't have scraps... just smaller and smaller projects.  LOL!  If it's exotic or on the rare side I keep it even if it's very small.

I save such pieces for lathe work, mostly pens as those blanks are much smaller.:D

Some of my exotic pieces are pretty small. ;)

All of these were cut on my 1944 Delta 24" scrollsaw.

'Bebo', below, was cut out of the scrap from the heart above.

Beautiful projects David.

Regarding the hot water bath and bending of the redwood.  Following the last bath, how long did you allow it to dry before you did the glue up?

  • Author

Thanks, Cal!  No more than 30 minutes.  It was dry to the touch and using TB I was going to introduce moisture back into the wood so I wasn't going for absolutely dry.  I left the deflector in clamps for about 3 hours before working with that piece, though.

I posted a short video on both FB and Instagram showing the difference in sound and a time lapse of the assembly and French polish.  It doesn't come across on the video but the difference in sound is much different in person.

In my effort to make a handful of videos using my new favorite video editing software, DaVinci Resolve, I thought one on building this passive speaker would be appropriate.  So even though this thread is close to three years old it's probably better to have the video here than create a new thread (even though with a new thread it will likely be seen more - oh, well...).

This is a short video, a little over 7 minutes long - (for some reason the video won't display)

Thanks David. Just realized I'd missed the original post during my AWOL years. Getting ready to watch the video in a bit. Thanks for tip on Ray Comfort's. Enjoy hearing him as a guest from time to time on AFA/AFR.

Glad you like it, Dave!  Let me know how you like the video, please sir.

Enjoyed watching the build. Excellent job on your editing techniques. The video flowed well yet provided good content value. Probably just me since I have hearing loss in my right ear, but I really couldn't hear the sounds from the phone. I use headphones with my tablet. Too lazy tonight to rotate to listen better on my left side. Thanks for updating the thread.

David, our software doesn't recognize the full url of the video page, you'll have to click on the "Share" button at the video source, and use that url, I fixed it for you.

Nice.   Couple of questions and comments …

At about 10 sec when you tilt the blade, do you zero the gauge on the top of the saw first?   I was given a similar gauge, have not used it yet.

Near the end about 5:45 when the black phone support is glued to the box … looks like the support is not flush with the box.

When you dusted the box with the white poweder before polishing … what is the powder?

The curved reflector is only attached to the bottom of the box.  Obviously intentional, but why?

And my only comment on the video, in the beginning when you are showing ripping the boards to size … looks like the same thing 3 or 4 times.

Thanks, Dave!  I have the machine sounds turned down so they don't overpower any voiceover.  But I also am on a desktop computer with Altec Lansing speakers and subwoofer so I hear everything just great.  I often forget that folks use their phones or tablets - sorry about that!

Thanks, John, but for me it's still showing as 'Video unavailable'.  The link that says 'Watch on YouTube' works just fine, though.

Ok, in order - the blade is always at 90° and the table is perfectly level left to right, always at 0.0°.  I have it about 0.7° tilted toward me back to front, though.  If something is rolling I want it coming toward me rather than rolling off the back of the saw.

No, the Ebony is proud of the bottom of the box.  You can see it in the photos near the end of the video at 7:26.  It is much thicker than the Curly Maple so there's no way it could be flush on the bottom without protruding into the interior of the box.

It is what I said in the video, Pumice.  It's actually grade FFFF Pumice.

The Curly Redwood is glued to both the side and the bottom.  It may appear to be only attached at the bottom but it is secured on two sides.

No sir, those are different pieces being ripped, basically cleaning up both sides of two pieces of Curly Maple.

Thanks for your questions - hope these answers help!

Perhaps clear browser cache? It's there.

I use Edge for most of my browsing so copied the url and pasted it into Chrome where I've never been to this site; it still didn't show.  It's ok, if it's showing for y'all and the link works that's all that matters.  Thanks!

I use Chrome, Duck Duck Go extension; it shows there OK

Also showing on my Android phone, via Chrome as well as Samsung tablet using Firefox.

Need to subscribe to your channel though.

Interesting.  I'll have to try it on my phone.

And yes, by all means subscribe, turn on notifications!  Thank you!

Ok, i didn’t watch the video to the end, i didn't see the feet on the bottom.  And i had it muted so i didn’t hear about the pumice.

I thought about my comment about ripping the boards.  I’m thinking if you had the boards stacked on the saw table and it showed you taking a board off the stack and ripping it, it would look more like the real time process than the same thing repeated.
