"What's It" Basic Rules Reminder

• Only Patriot Woodworker Members are eligible to participate and receive the award.
• The MWTCA only accepts a verified source to support your answer, so one should be submitted with your answer, such as a patent, catalog entry, tool book reference, or a respectable website on the subject. Do not let these requirements prevent you from having fun and submitting educated answers on the subject without verification, we can worry about references later. All answers are welcome, as well as healthy debates regarding "What's It".
• If a verified and referenced answer is not arrived at by the end of each month's "What's It" project, a random draw will be performed for a "One Year MWTCA Club Membership".
• Only Patriot Woodworker's who participate in this "What's It" topic will be included in the random draw.

 

Additional What's It Rules

• Unless you are completely sure what this item is, please avoid "definitive statements" that appear that you are without a doubt claiming that you know what the item is. It's an ancient Egyptian pair of buckles for a belt to strap down live candidates prior to mumification.

I did a little checking up on H.F. Livermore.  Homer F. Livermore was born in 1864 and died in 1941 and the 1820 Census has his occupation listed as Metal Sales Agent.  This ad was one of many published in the early 20's and all dealt with metal tubing and such.   This picture looks like a fixture to go on a belt (leather strap is missing).  Maybe something to easily carry metal goods while they're forming them???

Horse tack.  Holds the pole from a horse cart.  In this picture it is right where it says trace or tug.

Gunny, I think you are correct.

 

It's not any kind of horse tack I've seen. Pulling a cart with those would really hurt a horse.

This is interesting though. Maybe for a loom?

Hmmm, the closer I look at it now, Dan could be right! I got a question in to an equestrian as we speak, perhaps she'll confirm or deny, or no comment.

It would be this part right Dan? In lieu of leather, they were thinking iron would be a great idea.

That is my thought.  Seen it called mud catcher too.

There are images of poles down the side of the horse and maybe the metal ones were used as a slide link for these.

Well my SWAG was a BDSM device from early 1940's   

I wonder...... If these are tack, are they from his personal livery?  Is so, what a family heirloom.

Having been raised on the farm with cows, horses, mules, pigs/hogs and chickens, I have to go with Dan on this one.  Atta boy, Dan.

I vouch for Dad, a stand up guy.  

Got here late but at first look I said harness buckle. Most I have seen are leather but I think Dan is onto this . Also from the size I would say it is fro a draft or heavy working harness so @HandyDan you might want to look at those old catalogs.
