My neighbor got some skin removed when he "tested" the 80 grit sandpaper on the 12 inch disc sander. We had a short discussion about just believe me when I tell you it will hurt. No need to PROVE you are an idiot.
May 20, 20206 yr Author Gun, after reading your last line it just might be that you are the one who has bad memories of using course sandpaper..... I have 3 of the 1 x 42" disk belt sanders I use more than any other sanding machine in my shop. One is loaded with 36 grit the next one has 80 grit and the third one has a worn out 1 x 42" 220 grit belt and is only used for knife sharpening...... and I have a 440 grit belt for special sharpening and I never go to that machine for any other reason...and the one I use all the time is the one with the 36 grit paper...so maybe as an IDIOT I have learned how to operate my machinery...I'm not afraid of my machinery but I do respect all of them.
May 20, 20206 yr Popular Post It only takes most people one time to gain respect for any machine. Unfortunately, I'm a slow learner. This is the only tool that hasn't bit me....too hard.
May 20, 20206 yr I think you have read the last line of my post and thought I was insulting you. If so I apologize. My reference was for the neighbor not aimed at you. Now bad memories, oh yeah me and a wire wheel on the grinder got into it once at my Dads shop, wasn't pretty. I count that one as a loss.
May 20, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Gene I have five of those sanding blocks all loaded with different grit paper. They might be the oldest things in my shop. These were from when I had a shop with one hired hand...The flap of one of them finally broke off.. I am getting my money's worth out of these that's for sure...All were bought around 1957 to 1961. For something used that often I doubt if I have anything that old still paying for them selves. I do have a few 12" long drill bits bought one at time but not used very often. Don't know if anyone is old enough to remember service stations use to sell naptha and or coal oil....in the fifties either was about 7 cents a gallon.. I use to use it often but right now I can't remember what the main reason was except for cleaning parts when repairing something on the car.. Then when I was selling Mac Tools and other auto repair equipment I use to think wow having a parts washer back in those days would have saved lots of time...
May 20, 20206 yr Popular Post My dad was a Standard Oil bulk agent/distributor. His only Naptha customers were dry cleaners. But, lots of homes were heated with coal oil. He sold lots of kerosene, too. Of course, his main business was gasoline oil and diesel. He had the contract to supply fuel and oils to about 100 miles of route 70 construction through our part of IL. Those were the salad days.
May 20, 20206 yr We used to buy coal oil for a nickel a gallon. Oh, and we used a glass jug with a finger hole to carry it by. We kept coal oil for 2 reasons. 1. To equip our lamps when the electricity went off. And, in the 1950's, any thunderstorm would cause the electricity to fail. So, we had to do school work by those lamps on those occasions when we had no electricity. 2. Sometimes, it was a medicine mixed with turpentine. If it didn't kill you, you got well. I watched them take that too many times. And I used to see those trucks go by toward the service stations. They were loaded with those round metal cans of oil. Other tank trucks would take gasoline or kerosene. Man, what great days! And, they had those trucks that had bottles of colas and other soft drinks such as Suncrest, Royal Crown, Double Cola, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Nehi and 7up to the store. And, we would collect the bottles to buy a cold drink and leave our bottles for recycle.

Yeah, not too fond of what a steel wire wheel can do to the skin...but i have a real brass wheel on my buffer and you can stick your hand right in there and not get the skin peeled. i love that wheel.
