April 19, 20206 yr Popular Post The largest platter I’ve ever turned. A 15 inch silver maple platter. I turned this on my Laguna Revo 1216 lathe on the outboard side. A bit nerve racking doing it. First I used the worm screw in the chuck and I probably should have used a face plate...once I had the bottom done and made the tenon for the chuck, it was easier hogging out the inside. I’m pleased with the way it came out...and so is my wife! I sanded up to 4000 grit, then used triple e and finally Aussie oil. Hope you folks like it...

I wanted to try and do a platter that would be like a shaker style and thought the wide rim would do it. The silver maple is dry. I got it from a local hardwood lumber yard. The piece I got was 2 inches thick by 15 1/2 inches wide and 3 feet long. It a beautiful piece of maple.

Just wondering if you can identify your source Pauley. I get most of my hardwood from Highland Hardwood in Brentwood NH Edit: By the way, beautifully piece ! Edited April 20, 20206 yr by Al B
April 20, 20206 yr Another great piece and job by you, Pauley. That wood is absolutely beautiful and so is the work.

In think I would use the face plate next time. Speed was a definite factor on the outboard side, and with the fact that the lathe vibrated pretty bad until I could get it round. Once I had the bottom turned and put the shape I wanted, it went well once I was able to flip it around and hog out the platter and shape the top....but it was a lot of fun....

They’re great people and have a large variety of material. I have also used Goosebay lumber.

April 20, 20206 yr That turned out (take the pun anyway you wish) beautifully Pauley. The silver maple that we have around here is a very fast growing and weak tree. That may be why it was softer than you thought it might be.
