I always thought this was what we called shrub oak but not so sure anymore. the middle has a deep orange red color with lighter tones around the outside. wood has deep reddish brown. thanks a head of time. I am thinking to make bird house from this piece but if anyone else has better idea I am receptive!

No idea on the wood, but the idea of making a bird house out of the piece is really neat!

Sorry Lissa - every plant I know of has flowers...  even your lawn grass.  It's how they reproduce.  Flowers are the start of seeds...

And please post up some pics of the bird house!

Was working on it a bit today. Going to try to make it all natural looking

Late to the discussion here, but depending on how many knot holes there are in a piece, and how big they are, if you have any more, that might make an interesting way to frame some family pictures.  Kind of in the same vein as a natural edge slab for a coffee table.

so here is the birdhouse I made. Nothing too cool. I wanted to keep it natural. The inside is just a base birdhouse with sticks added for natural effect. I have had a few interested tenets so far inspecting it.

Does it have a picture window in the back? I see some light.

No door to back was opened so  I could seal it from weather.  I always make doors in birdhouses  as birds will  not use them if there is even old  nest inside.
