March 10, 20205 yr Popular Post Well, some downtime in the shop. Good time to sharpen things up, maybe clean a few items up.... Since the honing guide went airbourne a while back...will have to rely on free-handing things.....Had a few that were in need.. Some had backs that weren't quite flat,,,yet.. The 2 on the left were the worst of this group.....the 2 Aldi's beside them weren't too bad.. Had one other chisel to do, for this afternoon... Had a lot of "issues" going on. Back needed work, and the handle needed fixed... Edge is NOT cambered on one of these chisels...should be straight across. top ring is loose, handle is not tight in the socket.... We have ways....some of the handle work was done on the bench grinder...."cone" was shortened, ring was lowered a tad...had to drive it on with a hammer and an old socket... The back and that edge were free hand sharpened... I worked down at the right hand end, right where the metal "floor" begins....Got the edge reground to a flat 30 degrees or so...and flatten the back a bit. Then, over to the stones.. A coarse oil stone ( a strop) and a 600 grit Medium India stone...then the papers... A 2,000 grit, and a 2500 grit paper. layer of oil on the stone, lay the paper on the stone ( oil helps hold the paper still) a bead of oil...and go through both grits....then the strop.. I have one of those brass wire "toothbrushes"....and cleaned the strop...and then just used it as is....Might have a year's worth of that green stuff in it...somewhere.. New flat bevel. Handle is fixed.. Back is flat where it needs to be flat...test drive? Hand-powered peeler? Taking a layer of rough off. But..this is not a paring chisel.. 1-1/4" wide. More for Timber Frame work. Still have more chisels in the line-up.. and.. Might take a day, or two? While doing a final clean-up on that wide chisel...felt a slight "tug" on my left index finger.....looked to see a 1/4" long slice....never really felt it.... had one of the freshly sharpened Aldi's decide to roll over....and on to the shop floor....guess it will be first in line, tomorrow
March 10, 20205 yr Author But...what IF one doesn't have such a wondrous machine, or can't afford one? then what? The WEN Wet Wheel Grinder I do have....is more suited to doing knives...if that...

Bought mine BEFORE the divorce came, back when I had money to burn...... Even so I do use a stone for quick stuff. Don't like to fire up the wet stone in winter months.
March 10, 20205 yr Author Popular Post A quick note: Thread was started, because on another thread, someone was complaining about the "HOURS" it was taking, just to flatten the back of ONE chisel. really..... now..I can milk a job with the best of them, and was taught by some of the best "milkmen" in Carpentry.....and that would put even me to shame..... Told the fellow I'd love to see a video of that.....I could play to put me to sleep better....Gunny, you need to hire a guy like that? Imagine how long he'd take to change the front brake pads on a Dodge Caravan.....

I am no expert when it comes to sharpening, the Tormex has spoiled me over the years. But at work a quick visit to the grinder and then the 1 inch belt sander would get the back of a chisel flat fairly quickly. Leaving just a little work with a stone to finish it off. If a chisel requires hours to flatten I gotta believe it is BENT to begin with and just useless. Or maybe he mistook a screwdriver for a chisel??

March 30, 20205 yr Author Hmmm...only one gouge? Might have to work on that...as soon as I learn to sharpen one... Mortise & tenon work = chisels Finger/Box joints, I hand chop mine = chisels Dovetails = chisels Clean up grooves and dados = chisels I do however, use a "Church Key" to open paint cans....and my bottle of Guinness. I even have one chisel DESIGNED to scrape the bottoms of Mortises flat, and pop out any chips down there... Each of these has a use....some are on "Standby" in case I drop another chisel..... Concrete floors are murder on sharp objects.. Now..about that gouge.... Soooooo, just what do YOU do with a chisel gets dull? Go out and buy a new one? or, just learn to sharpen the dull chisel? a $0.25 chisel and a $80 chisel have one thing in common...they both WILL get dull with use.....Unless you merely sit yours up on a shelf, for a display only, heaven forbid actually USING them. March 30, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm. need to turn this mess into a rack to store a few "extras" chisels, so I can just hang them up in a tool cabinet door Get the spaces just right...a few dabs of glue, and a few clamps.. Let this sit overnight...next day, remove the clamps, and grab a plane.. Needed a nice straight edge. take this over to the mitre box, and trim the ends square.. Then finish cleaning the other faces. Stanley block plane to champfer all the sharp corners....drill 3 counter bores.. Kind of shallow...just enough for the head of the screws. then a pilot hole was drilled too. Set this back into the vise, and grab those 7 chisels, and see how they will sit.. may go back, and run a countersink bit in the slots, so the chisels can sit a little better... Have enough scraps left over, I could build another one, if need be..

No sure how to do the gouge by hand. I have an attachment for them on the Tormex. Only way I ever have sharpened them. Send it to me if you want it sharpened up.

Got a couple I am up to using the 2# ballpeen with. Gonna have to decide soon, new chisels - or new heavier hammer... 23 hours ago, CStanford said: Why are you doing all of this in the first place?
