February 25, 20206 yr I want to use undermount slides to make a pull out tray and need some answers. Can any slide be used this way? Any particulars about mounting slides this way?
February 25, 20206 yr You can use the 75lb full extension drawer guides unless your gonna sit on it....
February 26, 20206 yr Matt Seiler used side mount slides like that several times on stuff he made to sell. I think he used the 100# rated ones, and said they are de-rated slightly when used as undermount, but the worked just fine.
February 27, 20206 yr Author Thanks for the response. I am making pull outs of a 24 x 36 shelf to hold turning blanks . The height between shelves is about 8 inches but had to reconsider the mount because the shelf is not screwed in place . Thought that he weight when the slide is pulled might cause the shelf to tip and then down comes everything.
March 1, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Finished this project today. Installed strips to mount slides on the shelf uprights. Installed the slide to uprights and then to a strip to mount the shelf onto. This is the shelves installed and partly loaded. May have to place a strip at the back of each to stop blanks from falling off when pulled out. Oh the shelves were some that fit the original system but damaged slightly. Measure on each 24 x 36.
March 1, 20206 yr Gerald I have done this before and after a time remade the bottom with short sides and a back to keep things from falling.
March 1, 20206 yr Add another in support of adding the back or rail on the back to prevent items from falling behind and preventing the shelf from returning to its normal position. Otherwise, a great plan and well executed.
March 1, 20206 yr I seriously misunderstood how you were going to use the slides. I thought you would place them flat under the tray, (that was the Seiler reference I mentioned). You really got that set up nicely.....well done! (Sorry for my misconception.)

I was thinking the same as Fred. Looks like you have done a great job with it Gerald.
March 1, 20206 yr I thought turned flat as well why I mentioned not sitting on them. Basically you did a pantry roll out setup. We did these in pantries every week...

March 2, 20206 yr Author Popular Post Y'all were not deceived but the plan changed. I was going to lay the slide flat on one shelf and attach a second shelf to the top of it. I reconsidered this plan due to the fact that the shelves on these supports are held down by gravity and not by any fasteners. Now my thoughts were that a heavy slider would cause the back of the lower shelf to tip when the slider is pulled out and therefore a design change. Yes I think backs are coming to stop the fall off in that area too. Although if all the stock on it were square it might not be much of a problem. And is I had enough baskets for smaller stuff also not a problem. But that is for another time right now.
March 3, 20206 yr For future reference, Rockler sells a side mount pull out hardware specifically for trays and shelves. I've used them in the past. https://www.rockler.com/centerline-lifetime-series-757a-100-lb-full-extension-shelf-slides-drawer-slides

Best price is 10 pack but I normally need that many anyway, I never seem to keep them in stock no matter how many I order. Usually brings cost down to under $7 a pair. Used them since 2012 no failures. Link
March 4, 20206 yr Gerald, I hear you! CSH is my go to place for drawer slides. I converted all of our kitchen base cabinets to pull out trays using CSH full extension, 100 lb. slides. I made 16 trays that have 2 1/2" sides that worked well with the CSH slides. Makes the cabinets so much better. Next kitchen will have base cabinets with drawers. I used the Rockler shelf slide in my workshop to store my Jet Mortiser. It worked fine.
March 4, 20206 yr Gunny, Glide Right just got a big endorsement on another forum I visit...I may have to give their products a try.
March 4, 20206 yr Never heard of CSH, but looking around I could have saved a few bucks last year - depending upon shipping. The Glide Right seems to be about the same price as Rockler unless you buy in bulk. 9 hours ago, scarletjim said: Next kitchen will have base cabinets with drawers. That's a good plan Jim. I just completed ours and SWMBO is really happy with the drawers. I used over travel slides from Rockler for our project. The only downside to these slides, I could not find soft close slides that were also over travel - but it hasn't been an issue.
March 4, 20206 yr Custom Service Hardware... I never buy drawer guides, handles, hinges, etc from Rockler. Yet to win the lottery...
