Gerald Posted February 23, 2020 Report Posted February 23, 2020 You need to measure even if you think there is plenty of wood, Measure. Something turners learn early but sometimes just sometime get so excited we forget John Morris and Cal 2 Quote

That defeats the purpose of doing these, I am supposed to release myself of the worldly accoutrements that trap us into thinking we have to have certain tools to complete a task with this tradition. I understand the knee jerk reaction to make a statement like that Gerald. But, Wille and Jogge Sundqvuist wouldn't be caught dead carving a spoon or utensil and breaking out a measuring device, that's blasphemous in this work. Come heck or high water, I am going to learn spoon carving the Slojd way, with a tree, a froe, a hatchet, and a knife, and by hand and by eye, that's it. Eventually I'll get it! Thanks Gerald. Gerald Posted February 24, 2020 Report Posted February 24, 2020 There is an excellent turner kn our club and when someone asks how he measures , when he does thin stuff about 1/32 , he holds up two fingers. Yes he measures but not with a tool John Morris, Cal, Bundoman and 1 other 4 Quote

I'm glad that the light has dawned for you, John. Eschewing mechanical measuring devices works for more than carving. Edited February 25, 2020 by Gene Howe John Morris 1 Quote
