Ron Altier Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 I have not seen a turning like this where they use the log in this positioning. Very interesting FlGatorwood, DuckSoup, Cal and 1 other 2 2 Quote
Gunny Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 Interesting idea, don't take that as I am going to try it though. Kinda scary. Cal and FlGatorwood 1 1 Quote
Gerald Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 That is a very interesting idea and I happen to have three logs in the yard. FlGatorwood, Cal and Gunny 3 Quote
FlGatorwood Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 It looks too dangerous for me. I'll watch you. Gunny and Cal 2 Quote

Cal Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 Beautiful result, don't think I will try it myself though... FlGatorwood 1 Quote
Gene Howe Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 That kind of beauty doesn't come without a vision and, considerable risk. Not to mention some neat tooling. Cal, DuckSoup, FlGatorwood and 1 other 4 Quote
HandyDan Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 Nice idea. Just don't pick a log with poison ivy vine remnants on it like he did. Hope he didn't breathe any of that in. Cal, Gunny and FlGatorwood 2 1 Quote
Ron Altier Posted January 9, 2020 Author Report Posted January 9, 2020 All of your replies were unexpected by me, I figured I'd be the only one that had never seen this type of turning and I also thought it could be hazardous. Having said that, I may try it out on my mini lathe, where the risks are reduced to mini. FlGatorwood, Gunny and Cal 1 2 Quote
lew Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 Pretty cool! Never tried on the big. FlGatorwood, Cal and Gunny 3 Quote
Pauley Posted January 9, 2020 Report Posted January 9, 2020 When I first started wood turning, I actually tried turning a live edge bowl on my little Nova comet II. Well, let’s just say when it was done it looked more like a woman’s feminine product....ha ha ha...never tried one again...but I want to. Cal, DuckSoup and FlGatorwood 3 Quote
Gerald Posted January 10, 2020 Report Posted January 10, 2020 (edited) Ok this is the story. My log is 10 plus inches diameter. So I cut the log and used Arbortech to make flats on both sides. Used my Elio Drive , which is kinda like a faceplate on a MT2 . After mounting I used the Arbortech to round the corners somewhat and get a better balance. Turning the outside shape when well but was a long process. Now to the tragedy. Starting the hollowing was normal, use parting tool to cut bark and make grove for thickness of bowl. On hollowing got a catch and bowl jumped off lathe but only knocked off a small piece which I found and saved. Put back in chuck and continued but that happens again and this time knocked off both wings. That was it and I turned it into a hollowform. Pics in this spot in 5 minutes sorry I was hacked did not get the finial mess nor new bowl Edited January 10, 2020 by Gerald Gunny, Cal, p_toad and 1 other 1 3 Quote

Well maybe a mission failure but anything you don't have to go to the hospital for is good. Gerald, Cal and p_toad 1 2 Quote
