I joined this site a couple days ago and have looked around and I am really impressed with what everyone is doing. I am going to be getting tools and supplies together slowly, but in the meantime I am interested in learning what I can. I don’t have a workspace yet so I was thinking of starting small with carving I think or small things so I can control the dust and not have to have to spend a lot to start. 
    I was wondering if you would be willing to give me some suggestions on tools and materials?

I'm not much of a carver but I've been told that Basswood is a great medium for carving!

Welcome, Greg. Your tool choices will depend on what sort of carving you want to do. Relief carving will require different tools than 3 D carving. Here is a decent video about choosing your tools for different types of carving. 

I wouldn't start with a set of tools, though. Buy just one or two at first. Often, sets will have tools you may never use.

IF you happen to be near a Menard's store, or a Hobby Lobby....both have all sorts of Craft, and Carving supplies and tools....

Greg, welcome to the nuthouse forums.  This is a great place and great people, we did have some ladies posting here, but they seem to be too busy these days.  Anyway, grab something to sit on and have a donut or cookie.  Sorry, you have to provide the beverage of your choice.  Have a seat and join right in.  If you need extra napkins, I think the folks in the carving section have them.

Not a carver myself, but I sure like the projects that all our carvers have been posting up lately.  Check out posts by @Smallpatch, he has been quite prolific with posts and a lot of detail into his processes.

It just so happens I am doing a light remodeled my on the kitchen and bath so I’m sure electrical is going to need done and will have me stumped 😂

Welcome Greg 😊 Relatively new here myself but am really enjoying the folks here. Carving is a great place to start. Some really talented carvers here.

Greg welcome.. My biggest woodworking ideas go in to carving now but can't help you for I use the power tools and they do cause lots of dust.

I have two good sized dust extractors but lately I started using a real small shop vac with the nozzle about 8 or 10" from where the grinders throws the dust....and I'm happy with the outcome.

  If you ever decide to go the Dremel route and the air tools  check out some of my pictures. I have no secrets as to what I do with the wood. I been begging others to start carving so I can have someone to discuss processes.
