November 29, 20196 yr Hello all. I am curious if there are some basic drawer box standards such as if so big, use 1/2 if bigger use 3/4 for the boxes. What to use for the bottoms. All the good stuff.
November 29, 20196 yr Most use 1/2 for sides and 3/4 for front and back. You can use 1/2 all rgw way around. 1/4 bottom unless it is intended for heavy Items.... There's a lot of options...just pick a standard... The drawing you have you can skip the dado in the front and back, cut to the high side of the dado and use it as a square to staple or nail on the bottom... Edited November 29, 20196 yr by BillyJack
November 29, 20196 yr Same as above. For a larger drawer that has alot of heavy stuff in it I go 3/4 all around, and 1/2 bottom screwed to the bottom. Don't skimp on screws. Then add dual ball bearing slides and you have one tough drawer. Most drawers I make are like above with 1/4 bottom in a dado. For shop stuff I don't use dovetails. Just screw the sides together. Why? Because I am likely to change something and can reuse it later. If I glue them together I am out of luck.
November 29, 20196 yr @BillyJack so I am not too far off. I figure cutting the dado will give me some practice. I over build most everything so I will certainly glue and screw things. This drawer will hold odds and ends. I have bigger drawers that will hold my routers. I am just checking in as I learn. Edited November 29, 20196 yr by acr_scout
November 29, 20196 yr Good questions because the drawers are likely to be the weakest part of a cabinet build and most of us want them to last a long time. Another consideration is the depth of the drawer because the deeper the drawer the more room for the side to bow out and on a dado slot for the bottom that can be catastrophic. Don't ask me how I know on my 28" deep drawers.....
