October 27, 20196 yr Popular Post Been slow at work most of the summer, my aunt and uncle wanted their cabinets refaced in rustic hickory, only got a few of the before pictures, after spending about 2 months making the doors, drawers and new face frames I was excited to see the outcome.
October 27, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Had to make a second support box to support the center of this section, it had a sag in it then wrapped it with 1/4" thick panels, still have to make crown molding and install that, the whole project is solid hickory, no plywood was used
October 27, 20196 yr Popular Post This looks great!! I recently talked to a designer about the changes in the industry. She pointed out that "open space" has become the big thing. As an example you see the space above the cabinets. For a long time that would have had a dummy blank plate or been extra storage. But the thing is you stuff things up there you never used, promptly forget about, and have to get a step stool to reach. They now are more into "transition" open space. Never knew so much went into the design of a set of cabinets.
October 27, 20196 yr Popular Post Hickory is one of my favorite woods...until I start machining it! Seriously, we've had our kitchen(s) redone twice in the last 15 years or so, and my wife choose hickory both times (stock cabinets). I had to make some trim items and a pantry door. But the hickory we got was no where near as beautiful as what you used; that is spectacular.
October 29, 20196 yr Nice! Very nice! I love hickory, black walnut and pecan. Pecan cracks easily but I have never had the privilege of working with other members of that family. Great job and just gorgeous.
October 29, 20196 yr Good work... If you ever decided to start doing refacing on the side, etc let me know. I use to make a living at it....

Thought it was one of the trade mags I get that's already gone to recycling. If I see it online, I'll post here. I'm a fan of Sarah Susanka. Edited October 31, 20196 yr by kmealy

But the example was in reference to what she called clutter cabinets. She went on about how the entertainment area (I am guessing she is talking about dining room?) needs to have a "flow?" to the kitchen. This means open area above the cabinets which should not go to the ceiling. Then move all the appliances to outer walls. Need a kitchen island with a sink. After a bit all I hear was $$$$$$$$$ to be spent. My wallet threatened to go Full Chernobyl.... Was interesting but had no real practical application for me. I am not a entertainer, nor is my wife. My idea of some good open space is a 10,000 sq ft shop. Now that I could dwell on all day.
October 31, 20196 yr FWIW, there is a pretty good book on refacing cabinets. He uses veneer on the face frames instead of pulling them off and replacing them (where practical). If you don't want to make all the doors and drawer fronts, there are several companies that will make them to spec. Arched tops and tombstone tops on doors are a pain.
October 31, 20196 yr I had refaced some cabinets in our house (3 houses ago) and used that book as a reference after someone over at the wood forum recommended it. It was quite useful....I think I passed it on to another forum member who was getting ready to do the same thing. You can buy it "used' on the 'zon for next to nothing.

Got mine and read it about 18 years ago, I think. Ran into a post by WapaFred this week, presumed it was you.
