October 11, 20196 yr Years ago our Toshiba big screen went out and we bought a flat screen but never really set it and the stereo equipment back up. I'm thinking floating shelves using $8.99 framing squares bolted to the studs for support or is there another way. I have access to the back of the wall under the stairs... Have some Bamboo ply I would like to use... Edited October 11, 20196 yr by BillyJack
October 11, 20196 yr Since you have access to the back of the wall, and it appears that the shelves will be hollow how about running some cleats through the shelves and into the wall? Could be done with scrap lumber.
October 11, 20196 yr I've done these before exactly as you stated Jack. We did not however have access to the back wall, so we had to cut into the drywall and secure the supports from there and drywall repair, after it was complete, it was really nice. 1/4" lag bolts will hold anything.
October 11, 20196 yr Author I think the problem would be supporting the weight. A framing square bolted to the stud sticking out the wall in a narrow slot i would thing would give it pretty stiff. In all $9 a bracket with two per shelf...
October 11, 20196 yr There's also those flat metal 1 1/2" wide strips that have pre-punched holes that could be lag bolted to the wall studs. IIRC they come in 3' strips for about $6.00 at Menards.
October 11, 20196 yr Author Popular Post I’ll take a look at menards and see what they got. I also wanted something smaller but floating at the bar for shot glasses. My ideal was blind grooves in the bamboo and then two pieces sandwiched together for a 1.5 shelf Running the lights are easy breezy.. Edited October 11, 20196 yr by BillyJack
October 13, 20196 yr I have used these for floating shelves several times. I just finished a solid Cherry Mantle using this hardware to hang it..
October 13, 20196 yr Author Looks nice but if some how my 2 year old grandaughter tries to swing from it I'm a bit concerned. I'm troubled between the floating shelves and a flushed frame since the old stereo equipment is 18" deep. Been lookin at flush mount stereos all night but no real great ones....
October 13, 20196 yr The four rods on the mantle go into the shelf just over 6”. My pictures didn’t show you the full length of the rods. Of course you can contact shelfology and they will design the shelf for your particular use. They will pre drill for mounting either match your studs or to screw into a header board. Here are some other examples we did using the shelfology system. https://shelfology.com/shelf-hardware/aksel-xd-3-rod-bracket/ this link show a bracket that will support 55lbs per Rod. Hope this helps. Of course using blocking from the backside is also an excellent option.
October 13, 20196 yr Author I’m beating myself up on this one. The older stereo equipment is 18” deep and I’m not sure I want it sticking out that far. I do want floating for the bar area. Still looking for photos on the internet for ideals.....................,,.,,,, Thinking now about just a flush face frame because its under the stairs and have back access to the equipment.. October 13, 20196 yr Hey Jack, for the stereo equipment, think along the lines of the old stereo consoles, where the stereo amp and tuner was set into the cabinet with the face plate facing up. Perhaps you can think along those lines so the stereo gear is not sitting 18" out from the wall. My how far we have come in our design process these days, back in the day we were happy putting our gear in a big ol entertainment system, now we want it all as compact as possible and against the wall as near as possible, I like it that way. Those entertainment systems were so bulky!
October 13, 20196 yr Author Agree... But your just confirming were old... I've so been there, done that...
October 13, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Shame on you John for reminding us how old we actually are..... Edited October 13, 20196 yr by BillyJack
October 13, 20196 yr Are you building a lower wet sink cabinet? Maybe you can hide it in there if so.
October 13, 20196 yr Author At one time I had considered putting the stereo in the bar but between playstations, xbox and nintendo , etc it just gets to be too much..yes I still have the original nintendo from 1985. I recently got with the boy and started trying to find all the game systems for the rec room.
October 13, 20196 yr Author At one time I had considered taking the front flat panels of oak off the bar and putting speaker cloth in. I have 4 sets of MTX AAL212 Dual speakers and two of the cabinets were damaged and I pulled the parts out. With this in mind I considered them for the bar, but going two steps back after going forward I stopped myself. Now after all the years we've tried to make our houses neat and uncluttered I've really just started to not give a crap.. Why hide ... Show it all.... The solution may be to make a face frame cabinet about 2" to 3" deep and let the rest hang in under the stairs. I can't seem to come up with a frame only cabinet that looks good. Any photos?

November 2, 20196 yr Author This kinda got my attention for my tv entertainment center... Interesting ....
