September 17, 20196 yr Popular Post What the title says. Wasn't without some troubles, but..made a start. had some "Project Boards" from Lowes...supposed to be Pine, seems closer to Poplar... Decided to pick out the best 2, and build a box....1/2" x 6" x 24" boards. Issues? Well, that Stanley #358 mitre box had a problem... test cut in the new location showed this to be a "Weeble Saw" Wobbled all over the place in the cut. Pull the saw out, turned the frame over...not only the King bolt was loose, so were the knurled bolts that hold the guides in place...torqued them down as tight as I could, and put the saw back in operation... Not even a slight wiggle. Board? I cut one of the 24" long boards in the middle...then checked the ends... A little off? Sent the ends through.. Then checked for square.. Square now. Used this to mark the other "half", and trim that. Then cut a couple "end" pieces... 2 sides, 2 ends. found some leftover plywood, from the Desk Project...seemed the right width, and was long enough to get 2 panels out of it.. Took the 2 sides, and matched them up in the vise... I also dug the shop stool out. Ends were close to matching each other..we have ways... End grain plane? That is the Stanley #3 I had just finished rehabbing...next, used a jig to lay out the finger joints.. That be the chisel I will use, to chop out the waste. Came towards the middle from each edge... "Dots" mark the waste. the wide finger is where the lid will get cut out... Layout tools. I had to carry the lines down to where they are to stop. marking gauge is set to the thickness of the end boards. And dug up the "Joinery saw".. Took me about an hour to get this far.....had to stop here, Boss needed errand run....might try later tonight? like I said, I had to dig the shop stool out of the place....we are a bit cramped down here.... Stay tuned....
September 18, 20196 yr Popular Post Good to hear you are back in the shop, the day is not complete until I have read through another Newman Classic project post.
September 18, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Hobby Lobby ( Lima, OH)...do NOT go there on Payday....very dangerous for my wallet.... Hinges, latches, and a screwdriver set for those TINY screws.... Did an all day road trip....involved Lunch in Sidney, OH.....back to Bellefontaine, OH.....then up to Lima. North end of Lima, near the Cargil plant....CF&E train....with the blades for wind turbines, a LOT of them, was sitting in the yard, waiting to go west. They go to a plant out west of Lima, where they are off-loaded on to flat bed trucks, then hauled to which ever jobsite needs them....They are first unloaded of a ship in Toledo, OH....CSX delivers the train to Lima, where the CF&E RR takes over...each blade takes 3 90'flat cars. After Supper settles, I might try a bit of shop time? Stay tuned.. No, I didn't get any photos of those blades....was driving at the time....

September 19, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay, Raggy....Hobby Lobby stuff, first... $23 and change sitting here.Close ups? Those are some tiny Phillips screws... Needed a set of screwdrivers. Ok, wood working... Added this spring clamp, to keep two boards from moving, when I flip them end for end. Then slid the pair down to about a 1/4" above the top of the bench.... hate saw into my bench...Shop stool at the ready? Seats! Yep, this is how much room I have to work in... High tech saw guides...Index finger, and the thumb...and a pair of MK2 Eyeballs...got both ends of the 2 sides done.. What you are looking at is the inside face. Now IF I were to open this like a book.. No markings to be found, as these are the outside of the box. Keep the "hinge" together, flip over... All kinds of markings....Top (T) Bottom (B) inside (IN) and each corner is numbered. Ok, set one of these aside, for now, and set up a way to chop out the waste.. That scrap of Ash the rehabbed plane worked over? Comes in handy..I chop about 1/2 way, from the end, and on the outside face of the board.. Then flip this over, and chop out the rest.. Then use these fingers, to lay out the end's fingers....run the saw again, and more chopping.. Chisel was used for the spacing layout...looks like it will be a nice fit.... Close, first ones are usually the worst...might get the hang of these, some day? Wanted to set up this plane.. As I will need a bunch of grooves cut... Need to set the depth stops, later....been a LONG day....think this will do, for today Stay tuned...
September 19, 20196 yr You mean to tell me all those flea market sales and not a single small set of screwdrivers to be found for a quarter????
September 19, 20196 yr Popular Post There are birds in the trees, singing. There are turtles sitting on logs, basking in the sun. Steve is in his shop making sawdust. The world is in it’s proper order.
September 20, 20196 yr Author Popular Post 3 hours in the shop, today....kind of tuckered out.. . All 4 corners are done... . I don't think this is how to open a box....unless it is from IKEA...not.. Time to get the groove thing going...means I have to stand up to work.. Did the grooves for the top panel and then the grooves for the box bottom panel... Needed a 3rd groove...had to exchange those short rods for some longer ones.. Reset the jig, too, and started making noodles.. A little wax in the groove helps.... I need this groove for when I "split" the lid off of the box.... Needed to get the plywood down to size...then a dry fit... Might be the top...might be the bottom of the box...and... Maybe this one? Did a dry run of the clamps... Going to need a few cauls for this one...new bottle of glue is upstairs...may try a glue up later...a little tired right now... Got a little bit done today....may try tomorrow to get something done Stay tuned
September 21, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Clamps came off today....23 hours after they went on.... Some of the cauls were stuck in the glue....clamped the box in the vise, planed and sanded things smooth and clean Then jigged up a way to hold the box still...and tight to the bench.. So I could run the Stanley 45 along the top edge.. Along the long sides...back into the vise, to do the short ends... Then a marking gauge, and my pocket knife...to split the lid from the box... That inner lip needed adjusted a bit..was a bit too fat...reset the Stanley 45 There is a depth stop on this side of the plane. Almost had enough length in the rods...needed the "cam rest" to balance the plane....liable to tip, otherwise...ran all four edges like this.. NOW, the lid fits down like it is supposed to...needed to figure out what hardware to install...hinges & latche....and maybe add some corner trim? idea is to make a few of these boxes...fill them up will a few tools, then stash the boxes on a shelf, with a label as to what is in each box...may need handles, too...some may get a bit heavy? Stay tuned...

September 23, 20196 yr Author nope..it is Monday.....trip to the store netted the brass corner brackets.....Sunday.....today's trip netted 2 paint brushes, and a small can of Minwax "Gunstock" stain.....may try to install the hinges in a bit...IF Shop Cat will get off of my lap....
September 23, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Just a tease for now, full story in a bit... have an errand to run...BRB....
September 24, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay,Raggy....picked up the brass corner brackets yesterday.... Comes 4 to a package....I just don't like the heads on those screws.... This evening? Tools laid out...Visegrips to hold a small nail, to act as a pilot hole "drill" Hammer to drive that. Small screwdrivers..visegrips also helped spin those, to drive the waxed screws home.. Box is held in the vise, so the lid will stay put....don't want things bouncing around on the bench...next.. Better close the latch, I guess... Next..a handle on each end... Then added a brass corner to the bottom corners...a light sanding here and there, as needed. then a coat of stain... Note the brass "feet" ? PIP #2... And #3 Waiting to see how this stain dries,,,may need a second coat....and then a coat or 3 of Amber Shellac... Stay tuned...need to get me eyeballs un-crossed, now..
September 24, 20196 yr Good looking box. Nice joints and the hardware really sets it off. But, God, I hate those teeny little nails. Edited September 24, 20196 yr by Gene Howe
September 25, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Got two coats of Clear Gloss Poly, waiting on #2 to dry, then a rub down.... Front view...strange grain..for being Luann plywood... Hinge side. Handle end. Poplar does have a bit of figure to it. Coffee can of holes saws.. May cobble up a board, to store these on, in the box? Box #2 is already starting up... 2 sides + 2 ends....waiting on the varnish to finish drying, before I make more saw dust... Stay tuned...
