Veterans sources

Featured Replies

I get information on a regular basis from the VA and from Veterans Friends.  I would like this thread as a dedication to all those who have served and may benefit from the entitlements earned.  Here is the first.  I will post others as I receive them.  If you have resources for veterans, this is a thread to share for all veterans who frequent our home.

Good idea, and if anyone knows someone at the VA that can help with issues.  That would be helpful.  Don't have any myself but someone else might benefit.  Ya never know.

My Mom just moved into an assisted living facility. It's quite expensive. When she applied for residence there, the admissions person asked if she or her husband (my step dad) were veterans. My step dad was a WWII vet (and Korean War). They told my Mom that the VA will help with her monthly fee once her personal funds are almost depleted.

Just passing it on for what it's worth.

Here is a great one for all of us to keep.

While I don't any social media, those who know of someone as family member, neighbor or friend please give them this information.  Yesterday, a Navy corpman told me that a young sailor shot himself with heroin to kill himself.  We need to keep our brothers and sisters full of hope.

I went to the VA here in Colorado, you know the state with a VA hospital that had a billion dollar cost overrun. When I went all I got was confusion and a VA guy that made me feel like sh__.

Then a friend told me NOT to go to the federal VA without going to the state VA first. I can't tell you how much difference it made. Very personal and convenient. They got me results and helped me so much.

I was told that the federal employees can't be fired and don't care. Don't know if that is true, but they sure acted that way

Ron, I meant to respond to your post regarding state VA centers.  I have never used one or even thought of one.  We have a federal VA health center here.  Also, the VA nursing home and hospital is in Biloxi, MS.  I have no plans to use it.  Federal employees can easily be fired if their supervisor has just cause.  Sometimes, it doesn't even take that if the supervisor doesn't like the employee.  I have witnessed too many of them being fired.  The problem that I see is that most of the nurses and all the doctors for the federal VA are contracted.  They cannot be fired.  They make over $100,000 per year and have 2 year to 6 year contracts.  If the contract is broken, they are still paid.  All their office space is free to them, all the equipment is free to them, and they have to furnish no medicine.   The doctor to which I was assigned, didn't take any personal interest in me.  I was placed in a normal waiting room, he would enter, sit at his computer, ask a bunch of questions that he asked me last year, enter my responses into his computer.  I could have entered the check marks myself.  It could have been done in the 20 minutes I sat and waited on him. When I told him my feet hurt, he didn't do anything.  The next year, I told him again that my feet really hurt and walking was difficult.  He told me to get better shoes.  So, I took the initiative to go to the podiatry section.  That doctor told me he would Xray my feet.  What?  So, he Xrayed my feet and told me I had no broken bones.  Duh!!!!!  So, I went to a civilian doctor who also accepted Medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield for federal employees.  Physical therapy, a podiatrist who did biopsies, examined my feet and finally this year a glucose tolerance test.  Yep.  Type 2 diabetic.  No other annual blood labs indicated that I was diabetic.  Now, the VA wants me back.  For what?  I get far better concern and service in the private sector, but that is just me.

The VA doc diagnosed my diabetes and earlier, the cancerous prostate. The diabetes is under control with diet and, oral medications supplied by the VA. I did my own research and, found a Laser cancer treatment center. Conferred with a new VA doc, who was familiar with the procedure and, he enthusiastically endorsed it. That was 5 years ago. I'm cancer free today.

I've only had one bad experience with the VA. That was a colonoscopy. I swear his scope was, in actuality, a WWII Norden bomb site. Future colonoscopies were done by a civilian!:OldManSmiley:

So happy you get good service.  I know many others do, but I am the freak that gets ignored, looked down on and considered non-existent.  But, I have good coverage and I am happy with my civilian doctor.  I see many men and women at the VA who have greater needs than I.  Obviously, they are getting properly served.  I guess I just don't know how to talk.  Who knows?
