John Moody Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 I wanted to cut and design or modify some grips for my 1911 pistols with my CNC. I was able to download a couple of 3D models to use but they are in igs file format and I can’t import that into my Vcarve Desktop. I don’t have autocad so I’m looking for something to convert the files to dwg files. There are some free converters out there but I’m afraid to use any I don’t know about. Looking for some advice or if someone can convert them for me. I appreciate any help that can be offered. Ive cut one set but they were not sized exactly right. Gunny, FlGatorwood and Cal 3 Quote
Gene Howe Posted September 1, 2019 Report Posted September 1, 2019 Hope you can get those files in a useable format. Those grips look too nice to discard the project. Wish I could help but, it's above my pay grade. Gunny, FlGatorwood, John Moody and 1 other 1 2 1 Quote
Popular Post Artie Posted September 1, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted September 1, 2019 Honest John, who I believe is a member here, has a lot of CNC experience. Over at The Router Forums where I met John, there is also a member who’s name is 4dthinker (I believe) and he actually teaches CNC at a college/university. He has always been very helpful to anyone who’s had a question. Might be worth your time to go over there and look him up. FlGatorwood, Gene Howe, John Moody and 2 others 5 Quote

I have a copy of that book somewhere in our domicile. I believe it’s kinda a CNC for Dummies type book. (I figgered that since I qualified i would buy it LOL). FlGatorwood Posted September 2, 2019 Report Posted September 2, 2019 John, what kind of files can you import? Maybe, a bmp or something like that? Irfanview does not give me the option to make a dwg file. I tried that and it is not an option. BTW, Irfanview is a free software that is very handy for sizing, cropping, converting to various types of files, etc. If you can accept a bmp file, I have it and will PM it to you. Cal Posted September 2, 2019 Report Posted September 2, 2019 John, those grips look pretty darn good! There is a fella near me that (I think) does a lot of pistol grips. I have dealt with him on another couple projects though, and cannot recommend him Is there a tech school near you? You might check and see if they offer any type of CAD classes, if they do they might be able to do the conversion for you. FlGatorwood, John Moody and Gunny 3 Quote

John Moody Posted September 13, 2019 Author Report Posted September 13, 2019 I can open pdf, jpg, gif, tif and probably some others in that list. Sorry for the delay in answering you, but my wife and I have both had a bout of whooping cough and I am just now where I can be up without coughing every breath. p_toad and Gunny 2 Quote
