I visited a friend today who is moving to a retirement community in August.   He had a very complete shop and while the community has a woodshop, they could not use all his donations.   He's sold some and wanted me to come over and pick up two grinders that he wanted to donate to the woodworking club.   Well, low and behold, he had a couple more things.   One was a mortising machine that he offered me for free.   I have been trying to find an efficient way to cut mortises for a while.  I have a BeadLock but it's slow and you either need to chisel out the sides or buy the proprietary tenons.   Never got around to figuring out a router jig for mortising.   Can't wait to try it out.

You lucked out. Congrsts. Floor or bench model? What brand? Did you get all the chisels and the sharpener?

It is amazing how so much we have in the shop is almost valueless when it is time to close it down. Glad you could help your friend and wind up with a reward.

He has a big pile of sawhorses, jigs, wood, dust collection cyclone and other shop fixtures, about 3' tall, 4'wide and 10' long that's headed for Junk King in a few weeks.  I'll get some of it for the furniture bank.

Delta bench top.   Did not check the bag of parts but if it has 1/4 or 3/8, I'm happy.  I can buy what I need.

That's the one I had. IIRC there were 5 chisles. Used it to make a couple of Morris chairs. Had to buy the sharpening kit. White oak is tough.

Nice SCORE Keith!

Nice score Keith.  I am happy for you.  Can't beat a woodworker with a kind heart and most I've come across have one.

I gave a presentation on picture framing a couple of weeks ago.   I found that most (not all) picture framers are very closed.   IF you ask a woodworker how to make a mortise and tenon joint, you'll probably get 30 minutes of instruction and an offer to help.   I wanted to buy a picture framing vise a long time ago when I first started.  I called a few shops and the typical answer was, "Yeah, we have a couple of those around here somewhere, but we might use them some day." (unlikely given the technology of the time).   Later when I was doing a lot of moving claims and often had to replace glass in picture frames, I tried to buy some from a commercial supplier in the area.   The response was, "Well, we only sell to shops with a storefront that do $25K a year in sales with us."     I finally got them to bend and sell me a box of 25 pieces of glass.  I finally found some art stores (one neat Univ. of Cincinnati) that had a lot of art supplies and I've been using them mostly since.

I went to a garage sale where the couple was going to a retirement community. I felt badly for them, but they seemed to be OK with it. They just said it was their time. I picked out some quality tools, some I knew I'd never use. I guess I felt like I was helping. I think of them when ever I use one of those tools. Also maybe seeing the future for me and my wife.

Great find!  Glad you're helping to keep this stuff alive.

Got a chance to look at it briefly today.   What do you all recommend to use to hone/sharpen the chisels and how do you know / how often to hone them?

This is what I used. Works fine. Available from Amazon, among many other places.

Gene, please educate me on this tip.  Is this a diamond tip and what is it called?  Where do we find this thing-a-majig?  Thank you.

That's a pretty neat tool Gene, never seen one.  And battery operated to boot!

I know my chisels could use a good sharpening.

Amazon, Woodcraft and Rockler are a few places. All different styles. Some manual, some drill driven. Some inexpensive, some not.

Thank you for the sources.  I just need to know what to look for, please.  Thank you..

Thank you, Dan, Gene and Cal.  I have never heard of or seen such a thing.  I had no idea except to use a triangular or rat tail file and that was not good.  I will be shopping soon.  Maybe, I can use these one of these hot summer days while taking a break in the shade.  But, first, I need to buy some new jeans.  Two pairs this week broke into holes on the knee.  And, I prefer that hot shavings, sawdust or metal dust not get into my clothes.  Thank you gentlemen for educating me.
