Interesting read Bob, very informative.  You are correct rarely do we hear much about the ones that crashed and burned, and more importantly why.

Welcome aboard!!

Thanks Bob for your perspective particularly from one who has been there. Very well written. Could not agree more with your statement...The funny thing is that the audience for quality content is still out there...

BTW...Welcome to The Patriot Woodworker...great to have your knowledge & expertise with us. Looking forward to your participation.

Welcome, and thank you.

thanks Bob..

and welcome to the forums...

Welcome aboard Bob, I hope you will check in often with us.

And thank you for the link to your article.

Thanks Bob, nice insights.  But, "the times they are a changing".  I'm sure buggy whip artisans felt the same way, and many "dug in" to make even better whips (some of that survived in the S&M trade?), all to naught.  I'm more likely now to search for inspiration on the internet rather than a zine (BTW, this site is as disrupting in the field of woodworking as any other new facet).   The paper pubs that I most valued were / are the tips & tricks pages, but those are all on the Web, too.  I can't see anything on a phone (and scrolling drives me nuts), but my 8" pad does pretty well.  So, if you're in the publishing biz, nice knowing you, and sympathy.  Say hello to the Dodo bird.

@Bob Lang

I think you will find, that, your thoughts in the article ring true with most of the members here. Many of the newer members are Wood "refugees". There is an extraordinary amount of accomplished, talented, and imaginative woodworkers here. Not all display their talents, but they are always here to lend their expertise when needed.

I personally have only one active magazine subscription left. The magazine shall rename nameless. However, I will only say, that, their inaugural video subscription series turned me off, and put me to sleep. Once the magazine subscription runs out it is done, no more, the pain is too agonizing.

The real shame is nothing is worth subscribing to in today's' world. Not all of us want to build reproduction Chippendale furniture, but by the same token nobody here probably needs to see rehashes of basic techniques either. Where is the middle ground?

Having lived in the corporate world I feel your pain. If the leadership would stop trying to run something that they don't understand and, as you said, trust their people it may have been a better world. Would it have survived?  No! It would have only slowed the demise. The old adage of a supervisor only being as good as the people under them rings true. However, in the case of the magazines it wasn't the quality of the "worker bees" that was at fault. I agree, it was a lack of adequate leadership that sunk the ship.

Anyway, I'm done venting...again, welcome to TPW, Bob.

Thanks Bob, and welcome aboard. Great insight, and something I have seen happen in other organisations too, like one I worked for a couple of years ago.
