March 2, 20197 yr Popular Post Made a new lidded pot for the wife. Not sure what is going on with the finish. The base is padauk. The lid is lace wood. The finish on the lid was like glass. I put one coat of beeswax and one coat of Shellawax. Now there are spots on the lid that look rough.
March 2, 20197 yr Gorgeous! the last turning I did had a similar problem when I used wipe-on poly. Really checked it over good but when the finish started to dry a couple of spots looked similar to yours.
March 2, 20197 yr It's a wonderful piece Rusty, even with the blemish. Hey, live and learn! Still a drop dead beautiful item you made! Just curious, what caused that circular blemish?

Just curious, what caused that circular blemish? Not sure John. I usually get in a hurry. This time I sanded, and sanded and sanded some more. I sanded to 600 and it felt and looked like glass. I put on one coat of beeswax then one coat of Shellawax friction polish and it looked great. After around 30 minutes it looked like this.
March 3, 20197 yr Rusty those are tool marks . The tool compressed or tore the wood and this damage goes really deep in some cases. Sometimes it does not show til finish is applied. one way to see this is to use a sanding pad like Abralon. This goes all the way up to 4000 and will show every fine scratch , kinda like polishing. Most pros say the only way to remove tool marks is do not get them. https://www.turningwood.com/store/category/AB2

I used a piece of 1 x 6 and cut it round on my band saw. I put it on the vacuum chuck and turned it round, rounded over the corner and did the small grove and burn on the side. All I did to the top was sand. Thanks for the advice. I have sand paper that goes to 2,000 and sanding pads the go to 12,000. I will try to sand finer next time.
March 3, 20197 yr Author Gerald I went to your link and looked at the sanding pads. They look good and I will order some. Thanks again for the link.
