The Hayforks of Suave, France

The video is in French, but it's a neat look into the preservation of an art/craft that this region of France monopolized since the 12th Century. Sauve France has been making pitchforks, and they still make them to this day and they are still popular in their original form, made the original way.

What's interesting is these pitchforks are grown! Keep watching to see how they are harvested.

And the French is pretty neat too (even though I did not understand it), it kind of puts you into their world while watching the video.

Quote

Since the 12th Century, hayforks, made of micocoulier wood, have been made in Sauve. From the 15th century, a strict legislation keeps the secret of its production and the monopoly of its culture in Sauve. In 1688, producers reunited to plan the future of the production in agricultural cooperatives. These famous forks were sold to royal and imperial stables and later to republican ones. They were also exported to Algeria for agriculture works. With its chalky and rocky grounds, auspicious to the growing of micocoulier tree, the village of Sauve has known to reveal the particularism of this vegetal species. People from Sauve have created and perfected an ingenious technique of the “hayfork’s culture”. http://fourchedesauve.free.fr/historiqueA.htm

Merci beaucoup.

Pretty cool. Wonder what the annual production numbers are and what they sell for?

I actually emailed them Gramps to find out how much they sell them for, but the email address they have on file bounced back undeliverable. Depending on the cost, wife and I were thinking one would make a very neat wall hanging and interesting conversation piece.

Thats an amazing video John, thanks for sharing. I want one! but I'll bet the cost even in France would be substantial considering all the hours of work that goes into one fork.

I bet you're right, then tack on shipping. Especially an effort to preserve history locally, adds additional value right?

Yes it does. It reminds me of someone asking to have a piece of furniture built for them, and you do it then add up all the hours that went into it and your customer is shocked at the bill. Handcrafting things is not cheap.

Actually sitting here thinking about it, they may not be that expensive after all, before shipping that is. They do sell them locally to farmers and residents, they are still from what I have seen, considered a utility tool to be used, so perhaps with that in mind, the cost may not be that prohibitive to own one, again, until you tack on shipping. I just fired off another email to them, the address I acquired from their updated website seemed to go through, so I'll report back here what I find. Can't wait!

Thank you, John.

I guess it’s the family vacation then! Kids would probably get credit from school, for going to a foreign country, definitely a learning experience. Is the corporate jet filled up and ready to go?

By the way folks, I finally got an email back from the French, the Hay Forks cost 44 EUROS or 50 bucks US.

They do not however ship them out. If someone wanted one they would have to find a shipping agent in town that will purchase the Hayfork and ship it for you.
