January 30, 20197 yr Popular Post Here are a couple segmented turnings I recently completed. First time doing segmented turnings - blanks were actually glued up by my neighbor and given to me to turn. Going to have to try some glue-ups myself someday.
January 30, 20197 yr Popular Post Those are awesome! I've only done a few of these. I've always had difficulty getting the angles perfect. I did make a "press" which works pretty good but it was designed to fit my work bench. The threaded rods fit thru the bench dog holes and have a nut on the underside.
January 30, 20197 yr I like those. Never tried segmenting but should someday. Lew, that's a nice press. I like how it fits the dog holes in the bench.
January 31, 20197 yr I have yet to turn any bowls. I am wondering how the chisel behaves as it moves across the spaces in the vented bowl. How does the chisel behave compared to having something solid to shave? And, I suppose you use a skew chisel on the outside? And, what chisel do you use to clean up the inside?
January 31, 20197 yr Those are great looking bowls Irish. I really like the vented one and have the same questions that Steve asked. Plus, how to keep glue squeeze out from all those spaces?

Plus, how to keep glue squeeze out from all those spaces? Unfortunately I cannot explain the glue squeeze out as my neighbor actually created the blanks - I just turned them. There really was no difference in feel with the spaces, they are so small I did not feel anything - it was more of a different sound. I used a roughing gouge to knock off all high points, then various size finger gouges to finalize the shape and turn the inside. I did use the skew on the outside to smooth it - followed by sanding. Used a friction finish when done. Thanks for the comments.
January 31, 20197 yr I have not done an open space segment but from what other club members have said on the glue you just use small amounts of glue . If not then the glue has to be scraped or cut out of the sections.
February 5, 20197 yr Late for the accolades "60" but both are beautiful. I really like the open segment one. Thanks for sharing.
