Many years ago my father-in-law gave me a single shot 22 "varmint gun" as he called it. It was extremely accurate and he used it coon hunting when he was young. I fired it and it was a nice old gun. I think is is Stevens made in 1894. When I mentioned that I was going to give it to our grandson, my wife said "Wait I think I got the paperwork he got when he bought it."  I found it hard to believe, but she had the original hunting license he got in 1912. It even had cloth in the paper. Now I had something special. We believe this was his first gun, he was born in 1899. I made a case for it that will hang on the wall in his room, I'm sure.

What a great story, piece of history and gift Ron.

I'll bet your grandson will cherish it forever...

Just a suggestion, you might do a history write up as both you and you wife recall of the gun, then attach that to the back of the case in an envelope.

that's really cool.  Whatever you  do don't clean the patina off it.  It's worth some money just like it is.

very impressive...

That is super special Ron.  How old is the grandson?  Do you have any pictures of his grandfather that could be put in the box with it?  Is the sleeve the license in a UV sleeve?  Don't know if they make them or not, but if it is to be displayed it would help to preserve it.  Or maybe the glass could be a UV glass?

But that whole package - way cool Ron.

My wife is ahead of you on that thought. I inserted a small picture of him below the gun butt and she is making up a history of the gun to be inserted behind the license. I'll look into UV protection after Christmas, too close now to make any changes.

I wanted to also tell of the time I fired this pistol with my elderly father-in-law. We fired it at a pop lid on a tree and it was very true. Then he wanted to shoot his old shotgun. It was double barrel Damascus spiral wound with one disabled firing mechanism . Scared the hell out of me just thinking of firing such a thing, especially one that old. After pleading with him for quite a while, he gave up. It now hangs on the wall of my daughters house.(in one piece:))

Ron I think you should take the gun out, load it, and shoot a few holes in the wood display case to prove it still works...
