I like to keep my planes sharp

but I don't hold a candle to these guys. I caught this on another forum and thought it might of interest here. The Japanese really take hand plane skills seriously. Skip to the 2 minute mark to get to the real stuff.

Definitely amazing.  Wonder how many passes before they need to sharpen again?

The one that follows on the four different types of carpenters is pretty neat, too.   Don't think i ever have to worry about giving any of them competition.

Of course, they're not using your typical 2x4 from HD or Lowes, either.

I'm guessing the planing was done on either cypress or spruce. The cypress is native but they import a lot of spruce from Canada and the US.

Sounds right, Steve.

I would loved to have seen those 5 micron shavings...that's incredible.

5 micron = to ~0.0002". To be exact = .0001968503937007874"

Diameter of a human hair is ~.0035"
