Apple

My neighbor cut down a tree for an elderly woman neighbor. He always gives me a few logs. He told me it was apple. I cut up one log and rough turned a bowl. It is around 9 inches in diameter.

Apple is beautiful wood, that should be a really nice bowl when you finish turn it.

Fruit woods are prone to cracking.  Take care drying them.  Looking good for now.

Great looking so far.  I only turned some legs for a desk in high school...did a miserable job but would like to learn to do more things.   But, I suppose I first need to get a lathe.

Checked it today and still feels pretty wet. I have another one a little smaller drying with it. I cut a piece of log around 6 inches thick and put it on the lathe that way. I wanted to see the difference in the grain and how it would turn.

Absolutely! Great for pork chops, pork loin or ribs.

This  group was very helpful to me about a  year ago when I inherited the trunk of an apple tree that was 26 inches across.

Indeed, the common wisdom was right - fruit wood seems to warp more than other hardwood.  It tends to crack a bit more.

The grain tends to be more squirrely. Yet, the bowls that come out are quite amazing.  Possibly the prettiest of "common" wood that 

I work with.  

So, when I rough apple out, I have learned to leave the thickness much thicker than for other woods.  I will post pictures when I finish

a few pieces that have just come up to to be finished.
