Guys, I'm making a box to place my Leigh dovetail jig on and added a couple small drawers into it. The box is made from plywood with oak edging and has NO face frame. The bottom of the drawer will just be 1/4" ply rabbeted into the bottom, the drawer will have routed sides as I added oak runners into the carcass.

Now how do I make anti tip stops for a drawer like this? The case is 3/4 material and bottom has not yet been glued in place.

Pat, I have done this a couple different ways.

On smaller drawers I have simply screwed a piece of 1X to the underside of the top.  On stacked drawers I have sized the top drawer guide to act as the anti-tip for the lower drawer(s).

Clear as mud?

Won't the runners keep the drawer from tipping? If not, a piece of scrap screwed to the back of the drawer, inside or out, and high enough to contact the bottom of the box top, when the drawer is tipped should work.

It seems to me like to runners would keep it from tipping, as long as it wasn't pulled out all the way.

If you put a face frame on then you could use a piece of metal inside the ff so that it swings (one screw) then to remove the drawer just swing the stop up.

I guess my explanation wasn't right, I want a way to keep the drawer from being pulled out all the way. And a way to remove whatever I install quickly so I can take the drawer all the way out. 

Gerald, the oak facing on the carcass is the face frame which is the same as the ply it's attached to.  

flip up lever that in the proper position catches on the frame or a block/cleat...

make the lever ''L'' shaped to catch on a stop block mounted to the side wall

 

 

 Using Sticks picture you could cut the stop say 1 1/2" long and drill a small mounting hole a 1/2" from the end. Mount this on the back of the drawer with a small nut & bolt and a washer in between. The long end would hang down leaving the short end up as your stop. To remove the drawer just reach in and turn the stop 90 degrees and pull it out.

So that means I have to add another block on the carcass for this to hit?

Just a small piece on the inside aligned with the piece from Stick’s picture.

go one better and put stops to each side of the drawer...

The picture Stick posted will stop the tipping. But, won't stop the drawer being removed. If that's needed, another small block on the underside of the top, towards the front, would catch the anti tip stick screwed to the back and stop the drawer from accidentally being pulled out.

With a setup like that a couple of screws up under the top after the drawer is installed would do.  Get the screws positioned and started before installing the drawer then all you need is a stubby screw driver after drawer is in.

 

OR:  install a tether on the drawer back.

Drill two holes for each drawer. One hole in the back of your

box and the other hole in the back of your drawer. 

Use a length of braided string to tie both together.

The string will let the drawer only come out so far.

Works great...

Guys, sorry for not replying sooner to this but didn't see it. I used the two screw method and it works just great. While searching how to do this I also found sort of a spring mounted piece of wood that hits into a recess carved out into the top plywood.

I have used Stick's method and enabled the stop to swing down when you want to remove the drawer.   I have also purchased drawer stops that are plastic, screw on the back, and you reach in and flip it down when you want to remove the drawer.   When you re-insert the drawer, it flips out of the way.    I've also encountered a number of similar products when working on furniture, the worst of which were stops on the bottom that were a real pain to get disengaged.
