July 4, 20188 yr Author you just need a table saw, dado blades, and some patience. and a spline jig is helpful too (i made mine, but you can buy them too). only limitation is your imagination. go forth and do great things.

July 4, 20188 yr Author unseen to many is that much of woodworking is thinking, planning, plotting out how you are going to do something before you do it quickly on the power tools. it may only take a few seconds to make a cut, but you can be sure that there were many minutes, and perhaps hours, of thinking that went before that to make sure that the cut was done correctly the first time. little things like taking the time to line up the grain so i flows around the corners. selecting wood that is appropriate for the spot it's going to be in long term. "it's just a box".....yep, it's just a box. so make your own if you are so cheap and smart. i have things to do in my shop. excellence takes time and patience. you have to see it in your head, then transcribe that to paper and add dimensions. and then you can start touching wood and making the plan come to 3D. a good part of woodworking is knowing how to make a box. ugly or pretty, square or not so square, simple joinery or complicated joinery.

And I might add, a bit of craftsmanship skill and imagination. Nicely done.

July 5, 20188 yr Author well, just learned that another uncle passed away yesterday. if she asks, i'll make another. fortunately, i bought 2 pair of hinges, so i'm good to go on that part. have some maple and cherry in hand. she's due to stop by this morning to pick this up, we'll talk then. when loved ones die, we are sad because they are no longer with us, but we should be joyful because now they are in Heaven with God.
July 5, 20188 yr Author i think i got over paid: and it's our anniversary today, so my wife gets flowers (the only flowers i buy her have roots attached for planting in her gardens).
