Popular Post steven newman Posted May 26, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 26, 2018 Friday's Follies.... Yard sale find.. pair of 36" clamps..$4. Gray fabric the Boss picked out for the headboard. Can of stain/varnish is also her choice "Weathered Gray"...her choice,...not mine. Stapler...three tries to find staples that would actually FIT IN THE DARNN THING Nada...bought three boxes of these, instead.. Plywood panel got a rebate done.. Peeled one layer, about 1/2" wide. Foam panels were the wrong size....had to go back and get the 1" thick roll Grandson and I pulled and nailed the fabric in place, as tight as we could. Then we assembled a few pieces with some glue. A rail was added first, and screwed in place, then clamps were added to the top of the head board.. Got out a vintage drill... And a pencil sharpener.. Made for Carpenter's pencils...worked just fine to bevel the leading ends of the dowel....spot of glue, and a hammer to drive it home.. Will clean up tomorrow, and cut the dowel flush. Was a very LONG day..I am worn out.. Maybe tomorrow, I can get this thing done? Stay tuned Gerald, HARO50, Harry Brink and 2 others 5 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted May 26, 2018 Report Posted May 26, 2018 Good buy on the clamps there "bandit." Were you wearing a mask? One can never have enough clamps. HARO50 and steven newman 2 Quote
Gerald Posted May 26, 2018 Report Posted May 26, 2018 Glad the design decisions did not slow you. I have a couple of those F style I thing in 36 you can have if you come and get them. I use my 36 and 54 Bessey. Love that drill you have trained to float. Too late now but on the fabric you can use contact cement to mount it on board and then install. It is coming together nicely HARO50 and steven newman 2 Quote
steven newman Posted May 26, 2018 Author Report Posted May 26, 2018 Panel is a 1/2" thick plywood base, and a 1" thick foam sheet.....nails to hold...a bit better than just glue. Too hot today, to do much work...may start up a "Night Shift"... Drill is hanging on for dear life...to a 1/4" drill bit. Grandpadave52 1 Quote
steven newman Posted May 28, 2018 Author Report Posted May 28, 2018 I am not a fan of the finish the Boss has picked out...not my choice....yet I am supposed to make it look "good" "Miracle Worker"? This is the first coat....maybe a second might help out? Also, I am told she only wants what will show, once the bed has been made, to get this finish.....not my choice... But, I can try at least to make it looks as good as I can....if the Boss is happy.... Outside of the rails will get this stuff. Need to get the footboard done....stuff is NASTY, no matter how well you stir it up.... Can't wait to get this done...and "covered" up. needed the Dinning Room table to work on the rails...so....the Boss starts a 2000 piece puzzle ON that table....never easy, is it. Stay tuned, it is almost over... Grandpadave52, p_toad and HARO50 1 1 1 Quote

steven newman Posted May 28, 2018 Author Report Posted May 28, 2018 (edited) She already knows how I feel about that ....stuff. Back to wood working, today...an all hand tool day, at that....had to work upstairs in the Dining Room, on the table.....and a large shop stool. Needed 8 holes drilled.. Two on each end of the two side rails..pilot hole was a #6 bit for the lag to fit down into the #13 counter-bore...Cordless drill was used.. Might be a Stanley made one...Top of the rails on each end needed a small notch cut..so the end of the rail will fit the notches in the posts...cross cut was the easy part Which left a long rip cut... Two-handed grip....sitting on the plank, which was sitting on the stool and table...handle was a bit cramped.. For all four notches...Holes were done, so was the notches...needed a rail to sit the slats on...2 x 2 x 8' was a tad long.. Decided to test drive that PM Mitre box and saw.. far end was clamped to the plank...accounts for the weird angle once I got through...Saw will needs sharpened. Then a bead of glue and a few screws...and the only power tool of the day...a cordless hammer drill.. Twice. Let the rails sit, awaiting the "finish"...dragged out the foot board ( trying to hide?) and will see about a coat on all three parts. Boss likes the first coat....guess I will have to "one-coat" the rest...maybe I can get this bed done, by the end of the month? We'll see..stay tuned.. steven newman Posted May 29, 2018 Author Report Posted May 29, 2018 Went to Lowes tonight...because Wall E World no longer carries those Stanley folding sawhorses...walked in the door, Lowes had their brand sitting right there..about $40 a pair....actually found someone to ask...and she even knew where more were...and took me right to them! Needed two sawhorses to do the painting of the footboard and the two rails...Got a good thick coat of the stuff on each ( trying to use it all up) and can let it sit out there, overnight...I had forgotten I needed to plug a few screw holes...had to make a few plugs and glue them in..and trim them down.. Got almost as much paint on me fingers, as I did on the parts....been peeling the crap off ever since... Harry Brink, p_toad, Dadio and 1 other 2 2 Quote
steven newman Posted May 29, 2018 Author Report Posted May 29, 2018 "paint " has dried overnight....waiting on the tear down of the old bed, then the "new one" will get put together....then a 6 of Yuengling Traditional Lagers will get "torn down" 81 degrees outside...whew! 'Baked on finish"? Have been informed that when I do the cuts to size the slats...it will be done on these sawhorses..OUTSIDE.... Right now? Lunch Break. Film @ 2300 hrs..names will get changed... Popular Post steven newman Posted May 30, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted May 30, 2018 After messing around most of the day, including a round-trip to Huber heights, OH....finally got the old bed torn down, frame frame went to the curb... needed a bunch of room... Set up the head board.. 1/2" socket on a cordless hammer drill, to drive the lags in tight. then add the other rail...or try to... This end was too tight to fit the notch. Walked down to the shop for a wide chisel....used a 16 oz hammer...NOW it will fit... This end had a twist to it...big c clamp to pull the twist out, lags kept it that way.. cut the slats to fit..with a handsaw.. these two weren't too bad...third onewas a hair tight... Size 11 shoe made it fit..all three were screwed in place.. But no glue....still having to disassemble when moving...3/4" plywood was laid down onto the slats, and a few screws to keep it there.. Took a bit of work, but mattress was installed, with a mattress pad on top, and a fitted sheet Calling this thing DONE! Needs the covers and the pillows...this thing does not even budge...it ain't going nowhere... Almost done with my third Yuengling Traditional Lager....been that kind of day... Thanks for following along... Dadio, HARO50, p_toad and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Grandpadave52 Posted May 30, 2018 Report Posted May 30, 2018 Well, you certainly have put a new twist on the old adage: "You've made your bed, now lie in it" I suspect you're ready to do just that too? Very nicely done...Thanks for letting me ride along. BTW, when you get up during the night, try to help your feet remember those posts on the foot-board...if you don't you will the next time once the swelling goes down. steven newman, HARO50, p_toad and 1 other 1 3 Quote
