This is an old blank that I had set aside a couple years ago waiting for it to dry out a bit, but then it got used as a doorstop. 

I finally brought it in Thursday and decided I needed to get it done. Because of the original shape and the cracks, I am probably going to have to make this one fairly shallow, and quite possibly a winged bowl.

 

 I have to fill some cracks before going much further though, I just hope it holds together. 😊

Wood type is unknown. 

Kind of an ugly looking piece at this point,I am sure you can improve on that before long. Those cracks look fairly deep,hope it holds together.

Indeed, some of the cracks are completely through it, so I will need to glue those before going much further. I wanted to shape the bottom a bit and get an idea of where ALL of the cracks are so that maybe I can fill them all in one pass.

 

I just hope that it's not TOO far gone.....

Lookin' good so far! Maybe some epoxy instead of glu in some of the larger cracks?

Anxious to see how this goes. Not going to lie, I would probably do marshmallows with it.

I probably would have done that too, but usually have a fire ban around here

Charles I sure hope you wear a helmet and a face shield cause that looks like an accident fixin to happen..

Looks scary Charles.  Don't trust it until you get some of those cracks shored up.  Turn it at the slowest speed possible and practice ducking.  I don't think I would go for that adventure.

If you continue from here I would only turn at 750 or below. Stuart Batty says if turning below 1000 and breaks will fall straight down. Not ablsolutely sure when it gets that big, but slow is safer.

In progress, I wish I had a way to really get into the cracks.

Just FYI, this bowl blank is only about 9.5" wide (It's a 10"  swing lathe). Anything that size I refuse to turn over 650 rpm, and usually at it's slowest speed of 540-550. True, it takes a lot longer but I have worn a few pieces that taught me a thing or three . 

I cannot wear a helmet and faceshield at the same time, so I opt for the shield. I never put my face in direct line of fire, intentionally anyway. HANDS n forearms is all that I usually let get in the way.  

While I shore up the bowl I decided to get an older project done. A throw top that I have had sitting around here for about a year

Hope things have gone well so far with the "doorstop" piece.
