Substrate Thickness for Veneering

Featured Replies

I have a blanket chest project on the radar that has some plywood panels in it. I am thinking about using cherry for the lumber and maple for the panels, but then it hit me, why don't I veneer some really figured veneer to the panels.

So, here is my question: Is 1/4" MDF to thin for the substrate under the veneer? I realize I will have to veneer BOTH sides of the substrate panel.

Thank you for the help.

you could but the panels won't take a hit of any kind...

Good Point!

How would 1/4" plywood work with Veneer on both sides?

fine...

go w/ a luan...

BB would be top shelf...

Armstrong floor underlay would work well too.  High quality--no voids--locally available.
