January 26, 20188 yr Weather was into the 50s, around here.....van was at work, no cash in the pocket.....might as well do a walk about, and see what is in the two local antique stores, downtown.....Walking across a street,,twisted the knee a bit....ow! Finally made it to one of the stores....on the way around to a stall, noticed this gray thing $225+tax.....Appears to be a work bench...has a planing stop, too. Kept walking towards a cabinet... All kinds of goodies....however.. $38 for a well used #80? that #81 was even higher.. $58 +tax....cheap..compared to the other plane.. That be a $200+tax Stanley #72 champfer plane....time to wander down stairs.. Pedal away as you sharpen you edge tools.... The brace has a stove bolt? Another table had these..plus a pair of.. Time to walk down the street the the other store.... Yep, it says Junk Rescue.... Where I have been getting a few bits. Not sure about the rest of these toys.. need an axe to grind? Look close, you'll see a coping saw.. Turn around slowly, else you might miss something.... Then, one last look around this stall.. Ah...a little red vise. Soo, who ya gonna call? Did not spend a cent...just was "window shopping".....time to head home, and rest the knee....
January 26, 20188 yr Seems like you probably did good by not spending any $$. From the prices, they must have replaced some of the iron with gold.
January 26, 20188 yr Apparently the first place/booth was trying to cover booth rental on every sale??? Of course since everything is "vintage" the price goes up... You did exactly what I would have done...kept walking... Hope the knee is feeling better.
January 27, 20188 yr All of those items are meant to be used as "Home Decor" which makes them worth more. I only know that because they are in an "Antique" store.
January 27, 20188 yr Popular Post 225 for that workbench! That is one heck of a deal, look at the vise on that bench! Looks like an old Columbian to me, if it is, that Columbian is worth the 225 all alone. Take the vise off it, it's still worth 225, that was a real bench. If I was there, and had 225 to burn, I'd of snatched it right up. But I aint there, and I typically don't have 225 to burn, so it's all just smoke and mirrors aint it! But that bench, nice bench.

Especially if the name has a "Towne" or "Centre" in it.
January 27, 20188 yr Those are more like the prices I usually run into on rust hunts, and why I don't have a lot of rusty stuff that's been re habbed.

You've gotta be joshing. I gotta go look but I think that's the same vise on my bench. It came in a box of other old stuff I bought for $15.

Ya never know Gene! Of course I cannot tell by the picture, but it's looks like an early style Colombian, but there are literally thousands of "knock off's" for that venerable vise company.
January 27, 20188 yr My dad had a vise like the one shown. I always liked the removable wedge on top on the anvil part. Don't know what it was made of but it sure took a beating.

My 6", on the general workbench, is a Wilton and I am always on the lookout for them at a reasonable price. I did get a Colombian last year for $10 but it isn't a quick release.
January 28, 20188 yr It's a good vice. You can probably tell, I'm not a tool aficionado. If it does it's job, it's a good tool. That vice certainly fits that category. It gets used almost every day.

Kevin, here on the west coast, it's really slim picking, I am very envious of the mid west folks and east coasters, I am not sure where you are at, just assuming, if you are finding tools like you state, you can't be here in the west!
