vintage tools!

Featured Replies

Hi, over the past few months I have been bitten somewhat by vintage hand tools.

So far I have renewed/restored a knackered Henry Disston tenon saw, a stanley no4 plane, block plane, 71 record router, henry disston no8 backsaw, i bought a gents saw for 50p from a car boot sale and have just bought a stanley 151 spokeshave.

Gonna keep an eye out for a vintage brace/bit set next !

Looks like you have an excellent start on the collection!

I understand this is a slippery slope from which there is no return :D

An d you will need a good plough plane such as a Stanley #45. Good start

and a shoulder plane..

most anything but the Stanely Sweetheart #92...

I do have a poor man's shoulder plane, not quite finished yet though. I'll probably treat myself to a 93.

Yeah my fave crisps :).

My chisels were quite cheap stanley ones but the hold a nice sharp edge! I'll do a bit more research for vintage chisels and maybe get some in the new year

Welcome aboard geezer,

Cal

Greetings from across the pond.   From your choice of a few words, I can tell where you are from.  "Boot sale", "Crisps", "Knackered"

I have worked with a lot of people from England, Wales, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand.  (and a few from Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, Ireland, and English-speakers from Norway, Germany, Russia, Kentucky, and Poland)

Excellent start...gravity takes over from here...at 32ft/sec/sec you should run out of money in no time.

I, and others, will assist in slowing you down by relieving you of such a horrible burden...you may send your newly acquired "items of mania" to any of us and we will distribute that burden to manageable chunks...

Hence the signature line in my profile...we as your fellow woodworkers, will help you spend your money, help relieve you of buyers remorse, encourage you to buy duplicates, and hide your newly acquired tools from the Mrs. if needed. Just remember, we are here for you, Lee.

Yup! They do...almost a bad as someone from Northern Arkansas! Although, on second thought, not as bad as a Newfie, eh!

...and for those of you who have never met someone from Newfoundland...

I have an ear for most dialects, no need for subtitles with Swamp People. I had never met anyone from Newfoundland ( I have never been to the Maritimes) but one of our Canadian brethren sent me a clip. It was two Newfie fishermen talking. I had to listen to it dozens of times, just to understand half of what they were saying. If you watched the clip, they're right...they don't talk fast...we listen slow.

I've worked with a number of Newfies, they come to Ontario for the big money, but very few of them stay for long. A year or two, and it's back to The Rock! Nicest people you could ever hope to meet, I never met one I didn't like. :D And they don't mind being made fun of..... most of the Newfie jokes I know came from Newfies themselves.
